Zverev Has Seen This Escape Before
Alexander Zverev already knows Luciano Darderi can survive a match that appears finished. In Rome, Darderi absorbed a 6-1 opening set, saved four match points, and eventually beat Zverev 1-6, 7-6(10), 6-0. That result matters now for one reason: Darderi proved he can keep extending the match until Zverev’s advantage stops looking permanent.
New York changes the terms. Zverev finally escaped the five-set grind Saturday, beating Alejandro Tabilo 6-2, 7-6(2), 6-2 after spending more than nine hours across his first two rounds. He landed 71% of first serves, won 61% behind his second serve, and took 56% of Tabilo’s second-serve points.
Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line prices: Zverev at -1111, Darderi at +633, and Zverev -6.5 at -127. I predict Zverev in four sets, but the handicap is less straightforward than the moneyline suggests.
Fifty-Four Percent Opens the Second Door
Darderi beat Dane Sweeny 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 without serving especially cleanly. He landed only 54% of his first serves, although he compensated by winning 64% of second-serve points. Against Sweeny, that was enough. Against Zverev, the second ball becomes much more exposed.
Zverev won 20 of 36 points against Tabilo’s second serve. If Darderi again spends nearly half his service points without a first serve, Zverev gets repeated opportunities to begin rallies from an attacking position.
That is the matchup’s first hinge: Darderi does not need a dominant first serve, but he needs enough of them to prevent Zverev from turning every service game into return pressure.

Rome Left One Door Unclosed
The previous meeting becomes interesting only when Zverev fails to separate early. Darderi was one game from defeat in Rome before the match changed completely. The lesson is not that clay automatically predicts New York. It is that Darderi has already shown he can remain dangerous after Zverev establishes an enormous advantage.
That raises the importance of the first two sets. If Zverev serves at anything close to the 71% first-serve rate he produced against Tabilo, Darderi may struggle to create enough return opportunities to keep the score compressed. If that percentage drops, the Italian gets time to move deeper into rallies and make the match less dependent on first-strike tennis.
The ATP Betting Guide offers broader context for weighing surface, current serve form and prior matchup evidence.
Zverev Finally Bought Himself Time
Zverev’s straight-sets win on Saturday matters physically. His first two matches went five sets against Lorenzo Sonego and Quentin Halys, totaling more than nine hours. Against Tabilo, he finally reduced the workload and closed it in three. Reuters reported that he was pleased with the improved performance after those opening-round marathons.
Darderi arrives with a cleaner third-round result of his own, but Zverev no longer carries the same obvious fatigue concern that existed before Saturday. That makes the upset path narrower than it looked two days ago.
Prediction: Alexander Zverev wins 6-4, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.

Six And A Half Hangs Around
Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line lists Zverev at -1111 and Darderi at +633. Zverev -6.5 is -127, with Darderi +6.5 at +104. The total is 33.5 games, Over -112 and Under -109.
The moneyline is unusable at this price.
The handicap is more interesting because Darderi does not need to threaten another upset. He needs one competitive set, or one stolen set, to make 6.5 games difficult to clear.
Betting Lean
Luciano Darderi +6.5 at +104.
Zverev should own the stronger serve-return profile on this surface. The wager rests on Darderi’s ability to keep one or two sets close enough for the margin to matter.
