Zack Wheeler Gets The Braves With No Runway

Zack Wheeler gets the ball Saturday with Philadelphia’s margin for error already smaller. The Braves pushed its NL East lead to five games Friday, but the more interesting pregame question sits on Wheeler’s side of the matchup: the Phillies are asking their ace to reappear after one of the roughest stretches of his season.

Wheeler owns a 3.31 ERA for the season, yet his last five starts have produced a 7.59 ERA. Most recently, Seattle tagged him for eight earned runs, four homers and five walks in four innings. Atlanta counters with Martín Pérez, whose 3.05 ERA comes with a rather different recent trajectory: 1.20 earned runs per start across his last five outings.

Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line: Phillies -156, Braves +138, total 8. Pick: Braves +138.

Zack Wheeler Has Had Eleven Days

That Seattle start came August 24, giving Wheeler an unusual amount of time between appearances. The rest creates an intriguing problem for handicappers because his recent trouble has not simply been opponents stringing together unfortunate singles.

Across his last five starts, Wheeler has issued 15 walks in 21⅓ innings while allowing six home runs. Against Seattle alone, he needed 103 pitches for 12 outs. That is the part Atlanta can attack: not merely Wheeler’s stuff, but whether he can get back into counts where that stuff dictates the at-bat.

Pérez Wasn’t Supposed To Start

The Braves originally had Reynaldo López scheduled for Saturday before a knee issue forced the Braves to scratch him. Pérez therefore inherits a much larger assignment than expected.

The replacement isn’t arriving with a fire extinguisher and instructions. Pérez held Colorado to one run over 5⅔ innings in his last start and has allowed six earned runs across his last five appearances. His ground-ball tendencies also matter against a Philadelphia lineup that would much rather turn mistakes into extra-base damage than spend the afternoon beating baseballs into the dirt.

Our MLB Playoffs Betting Guide tracks the larger postseason implications as September tightens around both clubs.

Friday Left Philadelphia Another Question

Bryson Stott was scratched shortly before Friday’s game because of a personal matter, and interim manager Don Mattingly said afterward that his availability for Saturday remained uncertain. That matters against Pérez because Philadelphia may be deciding its left-handed starter lineup without knowing whether one of its regular infielders is available.

Atlanta also forced Philadelphia to use Orion Kerkering on Friday, while the Braves handed their own late lead to Raisel Iglesias for a 12-pitch ninth. The bullpen comparison doesn’t erase the underdog value if Pérez can deliver five competitive innings.

Plus 138 Prices: The Unknown

Bookmaker Sportsbook makes Philadelphia -156, Atlanta +138, with the total at 8. The Phillies deserve favoritism if Wheeler resembles the pitcher behind that 3.31 ERA.

The issue is that we’re paying -156 before he proves his recent command problems are resolved. Atlanta has won nine of 11 and now gets plus money against a starter whose last month has created a legitimate unresolved question.

Betting lean: Braves +138.

The obvious risk is Pérez’s late assignment against a dangerous Philadelphia order. But at this price, Wheeler has to supply considerably more certainty than his recent work provides.
