Zac Gallen Returns Where Mize Cannot Hide
Zac Gallen lost his rotation spot less than two weeks ago. Now Arizona is handing him the baseball at Petco Park.
Michael Soroka originally won the rotation decision because Torey Lovullo preferred his command and ability to generate swings and misses. Gallen subsequently made his first career relief appearance. Friday sends him back to the rotation against a San Diego lineup that has made short starts expensive in September. The Padres’ problem is Casey Mize.
Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line makes San Diego -135, Arizona +120, with the total at 7.
Zac Gallen Has Not Earned Six Innings
The name still carries considerably more authority than the 2026 pitcher. Gallen enters with a 6.12 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, and only 64 strikeouts across 104⅓ innings.
His two appearances since returning from elbow inflammation have not changed the underlying question. He worked 3⅓ innings against Kansas City, then three innings in relief against the Yankees.
That makes Friday less a conventional start than an attempt to discover how much starter remains. San Diego gets to conduct the experiment.
Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill and the rest of this lineup have enough contact and power to make Gallen’s reduced margin uncomfortable without requiring an early knockout.

Mize Has His Own Missing Innings
San Diego cannot simply wait for Arizona’s starter to blink. Mize allowed five runs in three innings against Miami last Saturday, walking a season-high five. Since arriving from Detroit, he owns a 6.64 ERA across 40⅔ innings. That is the number underneath his full-season 3.96 ERA.
September has been particularly uneven: 14 runs allowed across 17⅔ innings, with his last four starts producing only 17 strikeouts against nine walks.
Arizona brings Corbin Carroll, Gabriel Moreno, Geraldo Perdomo, Ketel Marte and Nolan Arenado into precisely that uncertainty.

Seven Runs Leaves Almost No Escape
The bullpens complicate an automatic over. San Diego recently restored Jason Adam from the injured list, adding him to a relief group already containing Mason Miller and Adrian Morejon.
That makes the first five innings particularly important. Zac Gallen is returning to a job Arizona had just taken away from him. Mize has completed six innings once in nine starts since joining San Diego.
A total of seven leaves very little room for both starters to escape their current problems simultaneously.
I don’t want to choose which one cracks first.
Prediction: San Diego Padres 5, Arizona Diamondbacks 4.
Betting Analysis
Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line offers Over 7 at -120.
Petco suppresses some offensive risk, and San Diego’s bullpen can shorten the back end. But seven is a low threshold for two starters carrying immediate workload and performance questions.

Over 7 -120.
