Zac Gallen Returns to a Tired Room
Zac Gallen returns to Arizona’s rotation Wednesday with unusually valuable cargo: innings.
The Diamondbacks used seven pitchers for the second consecutive night Tuesday, when Corbin Burnes’ first start in 464 days lasted three innings before another extra-inning game stretched Arizona’s staff through the 11th. Gallen now makes his first start since July 7 after recovering from elbow inflammation.
Kansas City counters with Daniel Lynch IV, whose return to starting has produced a very different question.
Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line has Arizona at -111, Kansas City at -102, and the total at 8.5. My pick is Arizona -111, with the Diamondbacks winning 5-3.
Zac Gallen Returns With More Than Outs
Arizona’s bullpen workload makes Gallen’s return valuable, regardless of how well he pitches.
The Diamondbacks have played 21 innings in two nights, using seven pitchers in each game. Tuesday required Blake Walston, Andrew Saalfrank, Brandyn Garcia, Justin Martinez, and others after Burnes’ abbreviated return.
Gallen’s condition therefore matters differently on Wednesday. Arizona doesn’t need vintage Gallen immediately. Five or six competitive innings would prevent Torey Lovullo from having to construct another game almost entirely from relief appearances.
Before going on the injured list, Gallen was 3-9 with a 6.34 ERA. The return is encouraging; assuming the old version immediately would be something else entirely.

Lynch Keeps Finding the First Inning
Lynch’s season ERA of 3.51 hides the more relevant number. He carried a 1.96 ERA as a reliever before Kansas City moved him into the rotation. Across his first six starts, he produced a 6.97 ERA.
His latest start explained part of the problem. Toronto scored five runs across Lynch’s first two innings before he retired 10 consecutive hitters. Lynch said afterward that his stuff had not changed significantly; his attitude had. He felt his body moving slowly early, then pitched with greater intent. His stated objective for the next start was to begin with the same reliever mentality and “fully let it rip from pitch one.”
Arizona now gets the first opportunity to test whether that adjustment survived four days.
The MLB Playoffs Betting Guide provides additional context for September games where current pitcher roles can matter more than full-season numbers.
Right-Handed Bats Find Lynch’s Problem
Lynch’s difficulties since entering the rotation have been particularly pronounced against right-handed hitters, and Arizona can present him with plenty of them.
Tuesday’s lineup included Gabriel Moreno, Nolan Arenado, Tommy Troy and Tim Tawa from the right side, with switch-hitters Ketel Marte, Geraldo Perdomo and Ildemaro Vargas available around them. The final lineup was not yet posted at the time of research.
Tawa is especially difficult to ignore after homering in the ninth Tuesday and driving in another run in the 10th. Marte has also hit safely in all seven games since returning from injury.
Lynch’s first inning suddenly has rather a lot of interested observers.
Minus 111 Leaves Zac Gallen Room
The price does not require Gallen to resemble his best seasons immediately.
It asks whether his return, Arizona’s right-handed options against Lynch, and the Royals starter’s unresolved early-inning problem collectively justify a near pick’em. They do.
