Yankees vs Blue Jays: Toronto’s Wild Card Chase Runs Straight Into Gerrit Cole
The Yankees scored ten runs on Wednesday. Twenty-four hours later, they scored none. Toronto spent three games finding increasingly inventive ways to beat Boston, then watched Payton Tolle retire 17 consecutive hitters while a 1-0 game quietly became 7-0. Baseball has a sense of humor about momentum.
Friday brings two clubs into Rogers Centre carrying different versions of the same irritation: both know what their offence can look like when it works, and neither has any guarantee that version will show up again.
New York arrives at Yankees vs Blue Jays at 68-53, second in the American League East but 6½ games behind a Tampa Bay team riding a nine-game winning streak. Toronto sits 59-64, fourth in the division and already 16½ games off the lead. The Blue Jays have won 11 of their last 17, enough to keep the Wild Card conversation alive, but they no longer have many weekends available to waste.
Bookmaker Sportsbook lists the Yankees around -160, with Toronto at +141. The total is eight runs.
Cole Is Starting To Look Like Cole Again
Cole enters at 6-5 with a 3.35 ERA, and his last start against Atlanta was his best evidence yet that the old rhythm is returning. He worked seven innings, allowed two runs, struck out nine and did not issue a walk while winning his third consecutive start. He also reached 1,000 strikeouts as a Yankee.
The important part was not the milestone; it was how little Atlanta made him deviate from the plan. Cole got ahead, expanded once hitters were defensive and avoided the sort of long innings that turn a starter’s pitch count into the manager’s problem by the fifth.
That’s valuable against Toronto. The Blue Jays have been more dangerous lately when innings refuse to end. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. reaches. Kazuma Okamoto extends the count. Ernie Clement finds another ball in play. Suddenly, a pitcher who appeared comfortable has thrown 22 pitches, and the bullpen phone is glowing.

Toronto Needs Bieber To Keep The Game Small
Shane Bieber enters with a 3-2 record and a 5.48 ERA across 42⅔ innings. Bieber is facing a Yankees lineup without Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton, three bats that normally change how a pitcher approaches the middle of an order. Judge remains out with a right rib stress fracture, while Bellinger and Stanton are also on the injured list and are not expected back until around the beginning of September.
That leaves Ben Rice, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Trent Grisham and New York’s younger hitters carrying considerably more responsibility than anybody planned in April.
The Yankees have been living off stretches of pitching strong enough to keep ordinary offensive nights relevant. If Bieber allows an early two-run homer, Toronto may spend the rest of the game trying to manufacture three runs against Cole rather than simply playing baseball.
New York Are Winning Around The Missing Names
Thursday’s 1-0 loss to Seattle looked painfully familiar. For a team missing Judge, Bellinger, and Stanton, there is very little margin between “patient offensive approach” and “everybody waiting for somebody else to drive the run in.”
That is why New York’s recent record is slightly deceptive in an interesting way. They have still won 18 of their last 29.
The pitching has carried them through enough quiet nights to keep the season moving forward. George Lombard Jr. and Spencer Jones have supplied useful moments. Rice has provided genuine power. Chisholm can still turn one walk into a scoring threat before the pitcher has properly finished being annoyed about issuing it.

Toronto’s Deadline Depth Has Already Been Tested
The Blue Jays spent the deadline trying to reinforce a rotation that needed innings. Then Jameson Taillon lasted two starts.
Toronto placed the newly acquired right-hander on the 15-day injured list with forearm tendinitis after he left Monday’s outing against Boston following four scoreless innings. Chase Lee was recalled, and Saturday’s starter behind Bieber remains unsettled.
That puts extra weight on Friday. Schneider would prefer not to turn the opener into another night requiring five or six relievers before a potentially improvised Saturday pitching plan.
Guerrero Does Not Need To Hit Like An MVP To Matter
Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s season has been unusually uneven. He has dealt with back, elbow and hamstring issues and was recently held out of the lineup because of hamstring tightness. His power production has also fallen well below the standard he established over previous seasons.
Yet Toronto’s offense still behaves differently when Guerrero is involved. The inning becomes longer because even an ordinary single or walk from Guerrero changes which pitches the next hitter is likely to see.
Against Cole, Toronto cannot afford to spend the night trying to hit three-run homers with nobody on base.

The First Bullpen Call May Tell Us Who Is In Trouble
An eight-run total points toward the starting pitching matchup. The more interesting moment may arrive when one of them leaves.
New York’s relief corps has repeatedly protected narrow games while the offence operates without its three biggest bats. David Bednar has been closing, and the Yankees have learned to live inside games where one clean inning matters more than another crooked number.
Toronto has experienced the opposite sensation this week. The Blue Jays rallied late to beat Boston 6-4 on Wednesday, with Tyler Rogers and Louis Varland finishing the job, then watched Thursday’s 1-0 deficit become 7-0 after Scherzer departed.
That is MLB Betting Hub territory in the most literal sense: the starting-pitcher line tells you how the Yankees vs Blue Jays game is expected to begin, but bullpen availability and lineup health often determine whether that expectation survives the seventh inning.
The MLB Playoffs Betting Guide also becomes increasingly relevant in August, when one club is protecting postseason position and another is running out of time to create it.
Betting Analysis
The Yankees deserve to be favorites because Cole supplies the cleanest individual advantage in the game.
He is pitching his best baseball since returning from surgery, while Bieber enters with a 5.48 ERA and has been much less reliable across full outings. New York also holds the stronger record and has continued to win despite injury-related damage to its lineup.
The -160 price still requires some caution. This is not the Judge-Bellinger-Stanton version of the Yankees. Thursday provided another example of how quickly their offense can disappear when Rice, Chisholm, or Grisham fail to create the big swing.
Toronto’s +141 is therefore not absurd. It simply asks Bieber to keep the game close long enough for the Blue Jays to test a lineup that has been surviving rather than overwhelming opponents.
Yankees vs Blue Jays Betting Lean
The lean is Under 8 runs (-104). Cole has the form to suppress Toronto early, while New York’s depleted lineup gives Bieber a better chance of surviving than his season ERA might suggest.
A 3-2 or 4-2 game fits the current shape of both clubs more naturally than another offensive exchange.
