Yan Xiaonan Loves Gomes’ Style. Shanghai Waits.
Yan Xiaonan thinks she knows exactly what Denise Gomes is bringing. That confidence is understandable. Yan has spent most of a decade making aggressive strikers miss, resetting the range, and punishing them before they can turn pressure into sustained offense. Gomes, meanwhile, has seven knockouts in 12 professional wins and built her reputation walking opponents backward.
But Gomes arrives in Shanghai insisting that version of her is incomplete. “It’s the biggest fight of my career,” she told UFC.com, adding that she wants the win to change how the division sees her: “Not just as a striker.”
Yan Xiaonan Said the Quiet Part Out Loud
“Stylewise, I love this opponent.” Yan’s comment tells us where she wants the fight to go.
She lands 4.69 significant strikes per minute while absorbing 3.23, with a 60% significant-strike defense rate. Most of her UFC offense (87%) has come from a standing position. Her movement, straight punching, and ability to exit exchanges before opponents answer have carried her through five-round fights with Mackenzie Dern and Zhang Weili.
Gomes is more willing to exchange in the pocket. She lands 4.43 significant strikes per minute at 49% accuracy, carries genuine power in both hands, and does some of her best work once opponents stop moving laterally. Her knockout of Elise Reed came after repeated forward pressure narrowed Reed’s exits.

One Word Followed Yan From April
Yan has not fought since losing a unanimous decision to Virna Jandiroba at UFC 314.
Her own review was specific. “Don’t be hesitant. You’ve got to trust yourself. Don’t wait too much,” Yan said this week, explaining that the takedown threat made her delay attacks against Jandiroba.
That matters because Gomes no longer offers a purely striking problem.
She averages 1.45 takedowns per 15 minutes and landed three takedowns against Tecia Pennington in her most recent fight. She also landed three before stopping Reed. Her four-fight winning streak includes three decisions, evidence that her current game no longer depends on finding the knockout immediately.
Three Takedowns Keep Appearing Beside Gomes
Gomes wants opponents thinking about more than her hands. Against Pennington, she was actually edged 58-53 in significant strikes but still won unanimously after mixing in three takedowns. Against Reed, the takedowns forced repeated resets before Gomes found the second-round stoppage.
Yan’s 65% takedown defense is respectable, but Jandiroba showed that simply threatening the hips can alter her striking rhythm.
The MMA/UFC Betting Hub and UFC Betting Guide are useful here because the obvious striker-versus-striker label misses the mechanism Gomes needs. She does not necessarily have to control Yan on the canvas. She needs enough wrestling threat to stop Yan from freely setting the range.

Fifteen Minutes Is Familiar Territory
Yan’s average UFC fight lasts 15:01. Gomes’ is 11:30, but three of her current four consecutive wins reached the scorecards.
Yan has fought 25 minutes against Dern and Zhang. Her output generally survives late rounds because she doesn’t waste movement chasing exchanges that aren’t there.
Gomes is 11 years younger and has shown no obvious conditioning problem across her recent decisions.
If Yan Gets the Fight She Asked For
Gomes has the power to punish a poor exit and enough wrestling development to complicate Yan’s preferred kickboxing rhythm.
Yan remains the cleaner, distance striker. Her defensive reactions, experience against elite strawweights, and ability to score while moving should let her win exchanges without matching Gomes’ aggression punch for punch. The 16-month layoff introduces uncertainty, especially early, but Yan’s style has never depended heavily on explosive athleticism.
Technical Prediction: Yan Xiaonan by unanimous decision.

Betting Analysis
Bookmaker Sportsbook lists Yan at -149, with Gomes returning +128. The total is set at 2.5 rounds, with the over heavily priced at -290 and the under at +237.
That total reflects two fighters who have increasingly shown they can sustain three-round fights. Yan has gone to decision in six consecutive UFC appearances, while three of Gomes’ last four wins reached the judges.
The more interesting price is the moneyline.
Betting Lean
Yan at -149 does not require bettors to pay the enormous premium attached to the over.
Gomes’ improving wrestling makes the fight competitive, but she still needs to solve Yan’s movement while entering behind offense rather than simply pressure. Yan’s 60% striking defense and far deeper experience against championship-level opposition give her more room to make adjustments if Gomes changes the first plan.
Betting Lean: Yan Xiaonan Moneyline (-149)
