Wu Arrives Before Carlos Alcaraz Settles

Carlos Alcaraz has already identified the mistake Wu Yibing will try to tempt him into making. After dropping the opening set to Jaime Fa,ria, Alcaraz said he became impatient and tried to shorten points too quickly. Once he accepted longer exchanges and constructed them more deliberately, the match changed dramatically.

Wu arrives with a useful counterweight to that lesson. He described himself as highly focused and in control of the rhythm throughout his 7-5, 6-3, 6-1 second-round win over James Duckworth, despite traveling without a technical coach, fitness trainer or physiotherapist.

Bookmaker Sportsbook opened Alcaraz at -2000 and Wu at +924, but the more interesting line is Wu +7.5 games at -118. Pick: Wu Yibing +7.5 (-118).

Wu’s Best Window Comes Early

Alcaraz is healthy enough to hit freely again, but he is still restoring match rhythm after more than four months away because of his right-wrist injury. He said after beating Faria that he was pleased his body handled four sets and that he finished serving with greater speed, percentage and fluidity.

That improvement is encouraging for Alcaraz. It also explains where Wu’s opportunity sits.

Wu cannot reasonably expect to outlast Alcaraz once rallies become increasingly varied and physical. His better chance is to keep the opening exchanges clean, take the ball early and prevent Alcaraz from immediately settling into the patient construction he rediscovered against Faria.

Daylight Removes Carlos Alcaraz’s Last Excuse

Alcaraz specifically blamed part of his early struggle against Faria on the night conditions. He said the ball became bigger and harder to move through the court, prompting him to chase short points rather than build rallies patiently. Friday places him back in the Arthur Ashe day session, so that particular explanation disappears.

That makes the first set unusually informative. If Alcaraz begins patiently, Wu will have fewer cheap errors to work with and will need to create offense himself. If Alcaraz rushes the opening phases again, Wu has already shown enough control this week to turn those mistakes into scoreboard pressure.

Their only previous meeting offers supporting evidence rather than a blueprint. Alcaraz won 7-6(5), 6-3 on Shanghai hard courts in 2024. Wu therefore knows what Alcaraz’s pace feels like, and Alcaraz knows Wu can keep a set compressed when his first-strike tennis is functioning.

The ATP Betting Guide provides additional context for game spreads where a heavy favorite can dominate the match without necessarily dominating every set.

Seven Games Leave Wu Some Oxygen

The handicap does not require Wu to threaten the upset. It asks whether Alcaraz can create at least eight games of separation across a best-of-five match. That is a different proposition.

Alcaraz’s ceiling is overwhelmingly higher, and once he found his timing against Faria, he won 18 of the final 23 games. But he is still only five competitive hours into his comeback and has openly said his priority is remaining healthy and playing without fear around the wrist.

Wu, meanwhile, has reached the third round without arriving in ideal circumstances. His recent injury history is significant, but he said earlier this summer that he was healthy again and finally able to play most of the tournaments he wanted.

The risk to +7.5 is obvious: Alcaraz can turn one loose service game into a set that disappears at frightening speed. Faria discovered that rather efficiently.

But Wu does not need three competitive sets. One tight set, plus ordinary service resistance elsewhere, can be enough to make eight games a demanding margin.

Wu Yibing +7.5 (-118) is the betting lean.
