Will Stephens Absorb Peyton Stearns’ Altitude Forehand?
Peyton Stearns has found a forehand Guadalajara reward. Sloane Stephens has spent two rounds denying opponents the separation that shot is supposed to create.
Stearns struck 17 forehand winners against Diane Parry, while Stephens has won four straight sets despite repeatedly falling behind. Thursday turns on whether Stearns can convert her heavier first strike into a sustained scoreboard advantage before Stephens drags her into another close set.
Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line: Peyton Stearns -175, Sloane Stephens +142. Stearns is -3 games at -110, with Stephens +3 at -111. The total opened at 21.5 games, over -112 and under -109. My lean is Sloane Stephens +3 games at -111.
Seventeen Forehands Change the Geometry
Peyton Stearns did more than beat Parry 6-2, 7-5. Her forehand produced 17 winners, and the altitude adds another layer of danger. Once Stearns establishes herself inside the baseline, the next forehand can take time away before Stephens’ defensive movement becomes relevant.
The opening two rounds have also shown Stearns solving trouble quickly. She trailed Parry 4-0 in the second set before recovering to win seven of the next eight games.
Stephens therefore faces pressure before the rally even becomes neutral. A short ball into Stearns’ forehand can immediately change who is moving whom.

Tjen Could Not Finish the Separation
Stephens’ route is less explosive. Against Tjen, she was out-aced 11-2 and fell three games behind late in the second set. She still kept the match from reaching a third set, winning 7-6(4), 7-6(3).
That matters against Peyton Stearns because the favorite has already shown that leads can disappear here.
Parry broke first in both sets Wednesday. Stearns recovered both times. Stephens has done something similar from the opposite side of the equation, staying close enough for an opponent’s advantage to become temporary.
Thursday could therefore turn on separation rather than dominance. Stearns may produce the more destructive stretches without building the four-game margin required to cover the handicap.

Clay Left One Useful Clue
Stephens has beaten Stearns twice, but neither previous meeting belongs on a Guadalajara blueprint. Both came on clay. And both went three sets.
The useful detail is narrower: Stearns has already demonstrated that she can hit through Stephens for extended stretches without sustaining that advantage to the finish. In Rouen in 2024, Stearns won the opening set 6-1 before Stephens reversed the match 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Altitude makes Peyton Stearns’ first strike more dangerous now. It also increases the importance of what happens when the first attack does not finish the point.
Stephens enters that exchange with four straight sets won and two consecutive tiebreak victories against Tjen. Stearns enters with the bigger forehand and the cleaner tournament scoreline, having beaten Emiliana Arango 6-3, 6-2 before eliminating Parry.
The -175 favorite deserves respect. The three-game spread asks for something more specific.
Stephens has to remain attached to the scoreboard. Her first two matches in Guadalajara show she can.
Betting lean: Sloane Stephens +3 games at -111.
