Why Is Samsonova Favored Over Peyton Stearns?

Liudmila Samsonova has lost three sets in Guadalajara. Peyton Stearns has lost none. Samsonova has needed consecutive deciding sets. Stearns has beaten all three opponents in two. And yet Samsonova enters Friday’s semifinal as the -143 favorite.

Perhaps the market has identified the more dangerous player. Perhaps it has become too impressed by Samsonova’s escape from top seed Marta Kostyuk. Peyton Stearns gets to test that price herself.

Samsonova’s Best Win Almost Never Happened

Beating Kostyuk was unquestionably Samsonova’s biggest result of the week. The method was less comfortable.

Samsonova trailed 5-4 in the deciding set and came within two points of elimination before winning the final three games for a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory. It followed another marathon against Kayla Day, won 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-6(5).

Samsonova therefore reaches her first semifinal of 2026 with six hours of competitive tennis already behind her.

Her attitude toward Kostyuk was revealing. Samsonova said that facing someone enjoying such a strong season left her with “nothing to lose,” allowing her to challenge herself instead of carrying the expectation.

Friday quietly reverses that psychology. Samsonova is no longer confronting the tournament’s top seed as an outsider. The Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line says Stearns should chase her.

Peyton Stearns Has Avoided Everybody’s Drama

Stearns arrived in Guadalajara saying she had no expectations beyond improving the things she had been working on and competing. The results have been considerably louder.

She beat Emiliana Arango 6-3, 6-2. Then fourth seed Diane Parry 6-2, 7-5. Sloane Stephens followed 7-6(6), 6-4.

Three matches. Six sets. No losses. That does not automatically make Stearns the better player on Friday. It does make the +117 interesting.

Samsonova’s first-strike power can remove time rapidly when her serve and forehand connect. Stearns brings a heavier topspin ball and has already shown this week that she can absorb pressure without surrendering the baseline immediately.

They have never played professionally. There is no previous matchup to settle the argument for them.

Six Clean Sets Meet Six Hours

This is where the market’s position becomes genuinely provocative. Samsonova has beaten the best player any woman has faced this week. Kostyuk was the No. 1 seed and arrived after an outstanding season. That victory deserves weight.

But Peyton Stearns has supplied the cleaner tournament. She has played 58 games to Samsonova’s 87 and has avoided a third set entirely. Samsonova’s last two matches alone lasted more than five hours combined.

There is no verified report of a physical problem for Samsonova, so workload should not be disguised as injury. It is simply another pressure inside a semifinal where Stearns has spent substantially less time solving problems.

Samsonova’s ceiling explains the favorite’s price. Her week makes accepting it less automatic.

Prediction: Peyton Stearns in three sets.

Betting Analysis

Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line: Samsonova at -143 and Stearns at +117. Samsonova is -2 games at -110, with Stearns +2 at -111. The total is 21.5 games, with the over at -114 and the under at -108.

The disagreement is straightforward: Samsonova owns the week’s biggest victory, while Stearns owns the week’s cleaner body of work.

At plus money, Stearns does not require the market to be absurdly wrong. She only has to turn six straight sets and considerably less court time into one more victory.

That is enough salt for me.

Betting Lean: Peyton Stearns +117.
