Utah Royals Have Changed Since March. Has San Diego’s Problem Changed With Them?

San Diego needed until the 87th minute to beat Utah in March. Lia Godfrey needed only her second professional appearance to decide it.

The rookie ran onto Kenza Dali’s first-time through ball and finished the move that gave the Wave a 2-1 victory at America First Field. Five months later, Godfrey has five goals, four game-winners and a club record already attached to her name. Utah arrive at Snapdragon Stadium in second place with 36 points. San Diego sit three points behind.

Four of Godfrey’s five goals have changed the result. Friday’s rematch is therefore not about whether Utah have improved since March. They plainly have.

The 87th Minute Hid What Utah Had Already Changed.

San Diego’s opening goal in March came from pressure rather than patient buildup.

Ludmila forced a mistake across Utah’s back line, and Dudinha intercepted and finished in the 18th minute. Utah equalized through Lara Prašnikar in the 67th before Godfrey arrived from the bench and scored the winner three minutes from time.

The Wave finished with 15 shots to Utah’s seven and six on target to three. Utah held 53% possession.

San Diego remains most dangerous when an opponent’s possession creates space behind the midfield or forces a hurried pass across the defensive line. Godfrey’s timing, Trinity Byars’ movement and Kimmi Ascanio’s ability to carry through central areas give the Wave several ways to attack those moments.

Bay Gave San Diego Wave Something New to Worry About

The Royals beat Bay FC 3-2 last Friday, their 11th victory of the season and a new club record.

Miyabi Moriya and Narumi Miura scored in the first half before Mina Tanaka converted the decisive penalty in the 79th minute. Utah did not dominate the match cleanly. Bay scored after six minutes, equalized at 2-2 before halftime, and forced the Royals to keep solving problems.

Miura’s goal showed what San Diego must protect against. Utah moved quickly after a restart, shifted the point of attack through Cloé Lacasse and created the shooting lane before Bay could reset.

Five Goals Have Produced an Absurdly Specific Pattern

Godfrey scored the winner against Utah in March. She scored again in San Diego’s 1-0 victory at Washington on August 2, arriving onto Byars’ pass and chipping Sandy MacIver. That was her fourth game-winning goal of the season.

Her influence comes from movement rather than volume. Godfrey does not need to dominate possession or repeatedly demand the ball. She arrives late into spaces defenders have already vacated, particularly when Byars or another forward drags the first line towards goal.

Three Points Separate Them. Their Paths There Look Nothing Alike

The Wave remain one of the league’s stronger sides, but their recent sequence has been uneven.

They beat Washington 1-0, lost 1-0 at Gotham and then drew Denver 1-1 at Snapdragon Stadium. Utah, meanwhile, responded to a 2-1 loss at Denver by beating Bay and moving to 11-6-3.

Readers using the Soccer Betting Hub should resist treating the March result as a permanent hierarchy. The NWSL Betting Guide is useful here because the standings, recent results, and matchup mechanics point in slightly different directions.

San Diego Wave vs Utah Royals Betting Analysis

Bookmaker Sportsbook lists San Diego at +122, Utah at +205, and the draw at +240. The total is 2.5 goals, with the over priced at -138 and the under at +104.

San Diego’s price reflects home advantage and the earlier victory, but it does not treat Utah like an ordinary underdog. The Royals have scored five against Portland, four at North Carolina and three against Bay during the past month.

The total reflects that attacking improvement. San Diego’s own recent matches have been tighter, but Utah have repeatedly pulled games into higher-event territory.

The March Result Left One Question Unanswered

Utah should aim to do more than they did in March. Their midfield now carries additional scoring threat, and Tanaka gives them another player capable of deciding a match inside the box.

San Diego still possesses the cleaner transition game at home. Godfrey’s movement between midfield and the defensive line gives the Wave a specific route through a Utah side that will not come to Snapdragon Stadium to protect a point.
