Twenty Aces Are Waiting for Caty McNally

Anouk Koevermans has never played a Grand Slam main-draw match.

She arrives at her first one having hit 20 aces in three US Open qualifying rounds. Caty McNally therefore opens Monday as a -526 favorite against a qualifier carrying one weapon that can quickly make that price feel uncomfortable.

Koevermans did not drop a set in qualifying. McNally now gets the first attempt to make her play something different.

Eight More Aces Arrived in the Final

Koevermans hit eight aces against Mariam Bolkvadze in the qualifying final and won 76% of her first-serve points.

Two days earlier, she produced another eight against Linda Klimovicova and won 83% of her first-serve percentage. Against Carole Monnet, the number was 77%.

That sequence matters more on Monday than Koevermans’ No. 228 ranking. McNally cannot attack returns that never become neutral balls. The question begins whenever she does get one back.

Rinaldi Hasn’t Changed the Blueprint

McNally enters New York with Kathy Rinaldi in her coaching team for the North American hard-court swing.

Her description of their work is revealing. McNally said Rinaldi has “never tried to take away any of the qualities that I have,” instead helping her bring them out at the right moments.

Those qualities give Koevermans a different problem from the three opponents she encountered in qualifying.

McNally can change height and pace, use the slice, move forward, and disrupt the baseline patterns that let a big server settle into the next shot. She has also produced evidence from the return this month.

Against McCartney Kessler in Cincinnati, McNally created 13 break points and converted five in a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

Fifty-Three Percent Left a Warning

McNally’s next Cincinnati match exposed the other side. Anna Kalinskaya held McNally to 53% of points behind both her first and second serves and generated 10 break opportunities.

McNally lost 6-3, 6-4. Koevermans doesn’t bring Kalinskaya’s established tour-level return game, but she doesn’t need it to create scoreboard pressure if her first serve keeps producing cheap points.

McNally has described hard courts as more physical, with greater potential for longer matches. Koevermans has spent qualifying making many of her service points anything but long.

The Tennis Betting Hub and WTA Betting Guide provide the wider US Open picture. This first-round match comes down to how often McNally gets beyond Koevermans’ opening strike.

Five And A Half Changes Everything

Bookmaker Sportsbook prices McNally at -526 and Koevermans at +377. McNally gives away 5.5 games at -106. Koevermans +5.5 is -115. The total is only 19.5 games, with the over at -111 and the under at -110.

That handicap demands more from McNally than simply winning her opening match. Koevermans has held 30 of 32 service games across her three qualifying victories. McNally has the return variety to disrupt that sequence, but repeatedly separating herself on the scoreboard will take more than one.

The favorite should eventually find enough returns. The qualifier’s serve can keep the arithmetic considerably tighter.

Prediction: Caty McNally in straight sets.

Betting Lean: Anouk Koevermans +5.5 Games (-115)
