Tszyu vs. Mahoney: Mazoudier Felt Something The Record Hides
Tszyu’s reputation has naturally grown around his stoppages. Mazoudier’s firsthand assessment points instead toward timing and sharpness. He told Fox Sports that individual punches did not feel overwhelmingly powerful.
The difficulty lay in how cleanly and unexpectedly Tszyu could land them. That distinction matters in Tszyu vs. Mahoney.
Mahoney has never lost in 18 professional fights and has considerably more experience over longer distances. His 17-0-1 record includes nine stoppages, but his route through this matchup is less about matching Tszyu punch for punch than whether his established boxing rhythm survives the favorite’s ability to disrupt it.
Bookmaker Sportsbook has Tszyu at -599 and Mahoney at +405. The price suggests Tszyu is the favorite to answer that question.
Mazoudier Saw Two Different Levels
Mazoudier is unusually careful not to dismiss Mahoney. He calls it a good matchup and explicitly rejects the idea of a whitewash. Then comes the line that changes the temperature:
“I do definitely think Nikita’s a level or two above.”
There is context behind that judgment. Mazoudier says he had developed substantially between facing Mahoney and Tszyu, making simple comparisons between their results against him misleading.
That actually strengthens his assessment. He isn’t arguing that Tszyu stopped the same version of the fighter Mahoney drew with. He believes he was better when Tszyu beat him.
For a fight between two unbeaten Australians ranked No. 5 and No. 7 by the IBF, that is considerably more useful than comparing BoxRec columns.

Mahoney Has Heard All This Before
Mahoney has spent fight week behaving rather unlike a man collecting his appearance money.
He has described Tszyu as “big, strong, explosive,” while also insisting he sees vulnerabilities in the favorite. At Monday’s press conference, he pointed directly at the betting disparity and argued that people inside boxing view the matchup differently.
His experience supports at least part of the argument. Mahoney has repeatedly gone ten rounds and has never been stopped. Tszyu has produced only two professional fights beyond six rounds.
Wednesday is scheduled for twelve. Nobody knows yet whether that difference will matter. That’s rather the point.
What Happens When Mahoney Gets Comfortable?
Mazoudier identifies distance as the wrinkle. He argues that Mahoney becomes considerably more competitive when allowed to establish his preferred range, while Tszyu’s pressure changes the equation.
Again, that’s Mazoudier talking from experience rather than somebody outside the ropes drawing arrows on an imaginary tactics board.
Tszyu’s recent stoppage of Oscar Diaz offered evidence of greater patience. He controlled the fight rather than forcing an immediate finish, with Diaz retiring after six rounds.

Tszyu vs. Mahoney: The Price Leaves One Awkward Question
The Boxing Betting Hub and Boxing Betting Guide are useful here because -599 requires separating the likely winner from the attractiveness of the wager.
Tszyu is the technical pick. His timing, pressure, and ability to create damaging exchanges give him the stronger matchup profile, and Mazoudier’s firsthand comparison reinforces what the price already suggests.
But Mahoney’s durability makes an effortless early finish less persuasive.
Prediction: Nikita Tszyu by late stoppage
Betting Lean: Nikita Tszyu -599
