Trinity Byars Changed San Diego’s Question
San Diego should have more of the ball Friday night. Racing Louisville may be perfectly happy to let them have it.
The Wave enter at 11-7-3, just one point behind Washington and Portland, while Racing arrive five points outside the final playoff spot. But Louisville’s path into this game is not built around matching San Diego possession for possession. Their pressure can attack the spaces San Diego must use to get the ball forward.
Trinity Byars is the player carrying San Diego’s threat. The question Friday is how often the Wave can actually get her facing Louisville’s back line rather than coming toward midfield looking for the ball.
Louisville Can Turn Possession Against Them
San Diego wants to build attacks through midfield and move opponents until space opens up for Byars, Melanie Barcenas, or Ludmila. Louisville can make the construction itself the contest.
Racing’s recent revival has come with a more aggressive, energetic approach without the ball. Emma Sears gives them pace immediately after possession changes, while Quincy McMahon can push high from the left and turn a safe San Diego pass into pressure from an unexpected angle.
San Diego’s answer cannot simply be to circulate the ball more quickly. Louisville want hurried decisions.
The previous meeting provides useful evidence here, and little else. San Diego had 71.3% possession, 22 shots, and 11 corners last August. Louisville won 1-0 after Ella Hase recovered possession and Sears finished the resulting attack. Friday offers the same trap with different personnel.

Trinity Byars Has Somewhere Louisville Cannot Follow
Byars gives San Diego a way around the press rather than merely through it.
She can start centrally and attack behind Louisville’s defensive line, but she has increasingly moved across the front three to find the defender least comfortable following her. That movement can force Louisville into a choice: maintain their pressing shape or track San Diego’s most dangerous runner.
Trinity Byars enters with eight league goals. Barcenas has scored in consecutive home appearances, while Ludmila provides another runner Louisville cannot abandon when Byars moves away from center.
Sears Doesn’t Need Many Invitations
San Diego cannot devote the entire evening to solving Louisville’s press. Sears has seven goals and five assists, accounting directly for 12 of Racing’s 32 league goals. Louisville is also the only team outside the playoff positions to have reached 30 goals.
That attack is why the Soccer Betting Hub and NWSL Betting Guide offer a more useful frame than the league table alone.
San Diego’s possession can control long stretches without making the game safe. Sears needs transitions, not territorial dominance, and the Wave have conceded multiple goals in three of their last four home games.

The First Broken Press Changes Everything
Bookmaker Sportsbook has San Diego at -149, Louisville at +350, and the draw at+300. The three-goal total carries -125 on the under and -106 on the over.
San Diego have the stronger attack once the first Louisville pressure is beaten. Byars’ movement also creates problems that become harder to manage as Racing’s midfield steps forward.
The price asks San Diego to solve that pressure often enough without giving Sears the same opportunity at the other end.
Betting Lean: San Diego Wave Moneyline (-149)
Projected Score: San Diego Wave 2-1 Racing Louisville
