Tommy Paul Meets Alcaraz Before Full Flight

Carlos Alcaraz has reached the second week of the US Open looking remarkably comfortable for a player who spent four months away with a right wrist injury. Tommy Paul now gets the first serious opportunity to find out whether that comfort survives sustained pressure.

Alcaraz has acknowledged exactly why Paul is awkward. He called the American “really dangerous” and said Paul’s style makes it “really complicated to dominate the ball.” That is the match in one sentence. Paul takes the ball early, holds his court position, and can deny Alcaraz the extra fraction of time that allows his forehand to become the organizing shot.

Bookmaker Sportsbook opened Alcaraz at -526 and Paul at +377, with Alcaraz -6 games at +102 and the total at 36 games. Betting lean: Tommy Paul +6 games at -125.

Six Tiebreaks Explain The Unease

Alcaraz has won their last five meetings, but Reuters notes that Paul has forced him into six tiebreaks across eight career meetings. That matters more than the raw 6-2 head-to-head because it exposes the recurring mechanism: Paul can keep enough rallies neutral to prevent Alcaraz from routinely dictating the first decisive strike.

Paul’s strength is not simply defense. He is comfortable absorbing pace without retreating too far behind the baseline, then changing direction early. Against Alcaraz, that can turn what normally becomes a forehand-led pattern into a more symmetrical exchange.

Tommy Paul Arrives With Five Sets Attached

There is one obvious complication. Paul needed five sets to beat Alexander Bublik, recovering from two sets to one down before winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-3. Alcaraz, by contrast, reached the fourth round with a straight-sets win over Wu Yibing.

That difference makes Paul’s first-set approach especially important. He cannot afford a long reconnaissance mission. If he starts returning from conservative positions and lets Alcaraz dictate immediately, the physical cost of Friday’s match could become relevant much earlier than he wants.

Paul nevertheless sounded anything but resigned. He said he refuses to walk onto court believing he cannot win and knows he will need his best tennis against Alcaraz.

Alcaraz Still Has One Missing Sample

The encouraging part of Alcaraz’s comeback is physical. After the long wrist absence, he said this week that he feels better than expected and has talked positively about protecting his mental and physical freshness through a lighter schedule.

What he has not yet faced in New York is someone who can repeatedly take away his preferred court geometry.

Against Wu, Alcaraz could increasingly dictate as the match progressed. Paul is less likely to surrender baseline position so easily. His early contact can flatten Alcaraz’s attacking angles and force the Spaniard into more neutral exchanges than he has needed so far.

That does not make Paul the more complete player. It makes him unusually useful for testing whether Alcaraz’s comeback is already ready for this level of resistance.

Minus Six Leaves Tommy Paul Some Air

Bookmaker Sportsbook’s Alcaraz -6 at +102 asks the favorite to create clear separation across three or four sets.

That is a demanding number against an opponent who has historically made their sets competitive even while losing the matchup overall. Paul does not need to threaten the upset for the handicap to survive. One tiebreak, one 7-5 set, or one outright set win changes the arithmetic quickly.

Betting lean: Tommy Paul +6 games at -125.

Alcaraz remains the technical pick to win because his forehand variety, transition game, and ability to raise the pace give him more ways to escape neutral exchanges. Prediction: Alcaraz in four sets.

The risk to the wager is Paul’s Friday workload. If the Bublik match has taken enough from his legs to blunt that early-ball timing, Alcaraz can turn a supposedly awkward matchup into something much shorter.
