Tiafoe Gets Another Serving Problem

Frances Tiafoe knows what a giant serve looks like in New York. Unfortunately, Rei Sakamoto has brought one with him.

The 20-year-old qualifier struck 38 aces and 76 winners in his first US Open main-draw victory. Tiafoe’s opening opponent, Martin Damm, had just hit 28 aces past him.

Their second-round meeting therefore begins with an unusually specific problem: Tiafoe has to find enough returns against another huge server without allowing Sakamoto’s first-strike tennis to turn the match into a succession of short, uncontrollable points.

Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line for the match makes Tiafoe -385, Sakamoto +293, with Tiafoe giving 5.5 games at -106.

Thirty-Eight Aces Were Not An Accident

Sakamoto’s 6-foot-4 frame supplies obvious leverage. What has changed is how long he can sustain the tennis around it.

After his Australian Open debut, Sakamoto and coach Federico Ricci specifically targeted the physical and mental demands of five-set matches.

“We were really trying to get ready for the five-setters,” Sakamoto said after beating Aleksandar Vukic. The payoff was not merely survival.

Sakamoto produced 76 winners across five sets and remained sufficiently composed to win the fifth 6-4. He described himself as maintaining a “higher standard” mentally and physically throughout the match.

Tiafoe Has Already Seen The Warning

Damm won 83% of his first-serve points against Tiafoe. For long stretches, Tiafoe could barely enter the American’s service games. He won only 17% of his first-serve return points but eventually found three breaks from nine opportunities.

His explanation afterward was revealing. “The last two sets I just wanted to be tough.”

Tiafoe reduced the problem to finding one break and protecting his own serve. Sakamoto threatens that calculation differently. The Japanese qualifier combines the serve with aggressive baseline production, and his 76 winners against Vukic didn’t come from serving alone.

The Hand Adds Another Layer

A physical detail is also worth carrying into Wednesday. Tiafoe recently had a cyst removed from his right hand.

He says the hand now feels good and that his Cincinnati run restored confidence in trusting it during matches. “Once I got into matches, I felt like I could trust it and just play my game.”

But his adjustment has not been simply physical.

Tiafoe says he is still trying to use his forehand and serve aggressively while becoming more selective about when to extend exchanges: “You have to pick your spots and not make every ball a war.”

That philosophy meets an awkward opponent after Tiafoe needed three hours and 48 minutes to escape his first round.

One Break May Not Cover Five Games

The moneyline reflects Tiafoe’s experience, ranking and considerable history of performing in New York.

The -5.5 games at -106 demands something more.

Tiafoe has to create separation. Sakamoto’s serve makes that less automatic. His 38 aces against Vukic and the five-set preparation behind them suggest service holds can remain available deep into the match.

Tiafoe’s experience against Damm also cuts both ways. He has just solved a comparable serving problem under pressure, but he required five sets and only three breaks to do it.

Prediction: Frances Tiafoe in four sets

Betting lean: Rei Sakamoto +5.5 games -115

Tiafoe may only need one opening per set. Covering the spread asks him to find considerably more.
