The Cowboys Handed Daniels the Green Dot
The Cowboys spent the week talking about fixing their defense. Then it handed the controls to a rookie.
Jaishawn Barham starts at middle linebacker Sunday because DeMarvion Overshown is out with a hamstring injury. Barham also gets the green-dot helmet, making him responsible for receiving Christian Parker’s defensive calls and helping organize a unit that is simultaneously missing safety Malik Hooker. Brian Schottenheimer insists the communication responsibility gets overblown.
Jayden Daniels is an unpleasant opponent for testing that theory.
Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line makes Washington +4 (-108) and Dallas -4 (-108), with Over 51 (-112), Under 51 (-104), Washington +177 and Dallas -204.
Pick: Washington +4 (-108).
Barham Inherits More Than Overshown’s Helmet
Schottenheimer likes Barham’s command of the defense, but replacing Overshown is not simply a communication exercise. Dallas is changing the player in the middle while preparing for a quarterback capable of turning one broken edge into an entirely different defensive call after the snap.
The Cowboys know the problem. Their own pregame discussion has centered on collapsing the interior while preserving outside contain against Daniels. Lose either half of that equation and Daniels can escape into space or extend the play until coverage fractures.
Hooker’s absence makes those fractures more interesting. Dallas prefers rookie Caleb Downs closer to the line of scrimmage, while P.J. Locke provides the veteran option deeper. That means Parker is rearranging two central layers of his defense in the same week.

Washington Lost Its Defensive Detonator
This isn’t an injury argument pretending Dallas is the only team with injuries. Washington ruled out Frankie Luvu with a groin injury and Chig Okonkwo with a hamstring injury. Javon Kinlaw is questionable with a back issue. Luvu’s absence removes one of the most disruptive pieces from Daronte Jones’ defense, just as Dak Prescott gets his first home start of the season.
But Washington gets Dorance Armstrong back after his Week 1 suspension. Armstrong has spent nearly a year recovering from injury and now makes his return against his former team. More importantly, he joins a front operating within Jones’ aggressive pressure structure.
That puts Dallas’ offensive line back under examination while All-Pro guard Tyler Smith remains on injured reserve following thumb surgery.

Prescott’s Urgency Belongs in the Price
Dak Prescott has already called this a game Dallas has “got to go win.” The Cowboys are 0-1, at home, facing a division opponent before Baltimore arrives next week. That urgency is real. It is not worth four points by itself.
Dallas is asking a rookie linebacker to start, wear the green dot and participate in containing Daniels without Hooker behind him. Washington is missing Luvu, but Armstrong’s return partially replenishes the pressure package facing a Dallas line already without Smith.
Prediction: Dallas 27, Washington 26.
That score is entirely compatible with Dallas being the better team Sunday. It is considerably less compatible with Dallas -4.
Betting Lean: Washington +4 (-108).
