The Astros Are Hiding Javier’s First Inning
Pick: New York Mets -135
Secondary lean: Under 8 (-111)
The Astros lead the series 1-0 after Friday’s 3-1 win, but Saturday brings an entirely different pitching problem. The Astros have changed plans: Bennett Sousa will open, with Cristian Javier expected to work in bulk, against Nolan McLean. Bookmaker Sportsbook prices New York -135 and Houston +120.
The opener is not cosmetic. Javier has not completed five innings in any of his last three starts.
What Does Sousa Actually Buy Javier?
Sousa is making his first career start after allowing four runs while recording one out Wednesday against the Yankees. Houston nevertheless wants the left-hander handling the opening inning before Javier enters.
New York’s lineup was still TBD when checked, but Friday began with left-handed A.J. Ewing, switch-hitting Francisco Lindor, Bo Bichette and left-handed Carson Benge. Sousa gives Joe Espada an opportunity to disrupt how that group encounters Javier the first time through.
Then the experiment becomes Javier’s. His last three starts have lasted five, four, and four innings, with 20 hits and nine earned runs allowed across those 13 innings. The latest contained something Houston can work with: eight strikeouts against Oakland.

McLean Has Been Removing The Chase
Nolan McLean gives the Mets something Houston cannot manufacture with an opener: length.
He has completed at least six innings in each of his last three starts while allowing one earned run total. Over his last 10 starts, McLean owns a 1.97 ERA, and interim manager Andy Green has praised the unpredictability of his arsenal and his ability to command it when innings become complicated.
Houston’s lineup provides a far different test. Yordan Alvarez entered the series leading the American League in average, home runs and RBIs, while Daulton Varsho has begun settling into his new club after a difficult first two weeks. Varsho is hitting .300 with five extra-base hits over his last seven games.
Friday Changed The Astros’ Bullpen Math
Hunter Brown delivered 6⅔ innings Friday, allowing Houston to use only Bryan Abreu and Josh Hader behind him. Both worked in the 3-1 victory, with Hader recording his 20th save.
That gives Espada options if Javier reaches the middle innings with the game intact. It also makes the MLB Betting Hub question unusually simple: how many clean innings can Houston extract from an opener/bulk arrangement against a genuine starter?
For the MLB Playoffs Betting Guide, Houston’s position sharpens it further. The Astros are 68-67 and leading the AL West.
Betting Lean
McLean’s recent run gives New York the more predictable route through the first six innings. Houston is asking Sousa and Javier to combine into something neither currently provides individually.
Betting Lean: New York Mets -135
The Under 8 (-111) at Bookmaker Sportsbook is playable if McLean supplies another six and Javier’s recent strikeout improvement survives the move behind an opener.
Prediction: Mets 4, Astros 3
