Taylor Fritz Bought Himself a Recovery Edge

Taylor Fritz has spent remarkably little time discovering whether his best tennis is ready for a serious test. He beat Darwin Blanch in straight sets, then dismantled Mattia Bellucci 6-0, 6-1, 6-1 in 98 minutes. Francisco Cerundolo arrives from the opposite route after needing three hours and 54 minutes to escape Jan-Lennard Struff 5-7, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Fritz understood the difference before Cerundolo had even finished recovering. After beating Bellucci, he said one day off is not enough to fully recover from a five-set match. That observation now applies rather neatly to the man across the net.

Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line makes Fritz -714, with Cerundolo +466. Fritz is -6.5 games at -120, while the total is 35 games. The betting lean is Fritz -6.5.

One Day Is Not Enough

Cerundolo’s problem is not simply fatigue. It is the type of tennis Fritz can make fatigue expose.

Struff forced Cerundolo through five sets by taking time away with a large first serve and aggressive first strikes. Fritz offers the same broad problem with greater baseline stability. He can hold cheaply, establish forehand position immediately after serve, and make Cerundolo repeatedly defend his own service games under scoreboard pressure.

That distinction matters because Fritz has barely had to play recovery tennis this week. Against Bellucci, he dictated from the baseline and never allowed the Italian to establish a different rhythm. Fritz said afterward that “all the important parts” of his game were working and that the performance gave him more confidence than his opener.

His physical freshness is therefore attached to actual form rather than simply fewer minutes.

Cerundolo Carries Four Hours Forward

The handicap would be much less interesting if Cerundolo lacked a weapon capable of changing Fritz’s preferred geometry.

His forehand supplies it. Cerundolo can generate heavy pace and shape from the right side, particularly when he has enough time to load through the shot. Fritz is at his most comfortable when exchanges remain relatively linear, and his first strike establishes court position. Cerundolo’s route is to move Fritz laterally before the American can plant and dictate.

The problem is repetition. Cerundolo does not merely need several spectacular forehands. He needs enough sustained depth to stop Fritz from walking through service games and then attacking second serves with increasing freedom.

Their only previous meeting offers limited but useful evidence. Fritz won in Madrid in 2024, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. The value of that result is not the head-to-head number itself. Cerundolo demonstrated that once he found enough time on the ball, he could disrupt Fritz for an entire set. The question is whether he can reproduce that pressure on faster New York hard courts after Thursday’s workload.

Fritz Has Not Needed Plan B

That may be the most interesting uncertainty surrounding the favorite. Fritz has not dropped a set through two rounds and has conceded only 11 games. Bellucci never forced him into sustained defensive patterns, while Blanch could not apply consistent return pressure.

Cerundolo should. The Argentine has already shown the durability to recover from two sets to one down against Struff, and there is no verified report of a new injury entering Friday. His challenge is to turn that resilience into enough early scoreboard pressure that Fritz cannot simply serve, strike first, and move on.

Fritz has had a wonderfully economical US Open. Cerundolo’s job is to send him an invoice.

The 6.5-game spread ultimately rests there. If Cerundolo forces Fritz into longer neutral exchanges early, the underdog can keep sets close even without threatening the outright upset. If Fritz continues holding quickly, Cerundolo’s accumulated workload becomes increasingly expensive because every difficult service game starts carrying more consequence.

Betting lean: Taylor Fritz -6.5 (-120). Fritz’s serving form, vastly lighter second-round workload, and ability to take time away from Cerundolo give him the stronger path to scoreboard separation. The risk is Cerundolo’s forehand turning enough neutral rallies into physical exchanges to preserve games even if Fritz remains the better player.
