Tanner Bibee Meets Baltimore Without Lefty Excuse
Baltimore just exposed the Cleveland version that cannot afford free baserunners. Tanner Bibee now gets the chance to show the Orioles a very different one.
Monday’s five walks from Joey Cantillo forced the Guardians into their bullpen after 2⅓ innings and gave Coby Mayo repeated opportunities to attack from favorable counts. Bibee arrives with almost the opposite proposition. His increased reliance on the sinker has been built around earlier contact, shorter counts, and keeping innings from gathering traffic.
Baltimore has already shown Cleveland exactly where the danger lies. Tuesday asks whether Bibee’s reinvention can take it away.
Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line: Orioles -127, Guardians +113, total 8.5. Pick: Guardians +113.
Tanner Bibee Changed What Hitters See
Bibee’s 5-15 record is ugly enough to frighten casual inspection, but it conceals the most important development in his season.
After allowing five homers against Washington in May, Bibee transformed his sinker from a surprise pitch into a primary weapon. Over his next six starts, its usage jumped from 15.8% to 37.2%, and Bibee produced a 2.29 ERA across 39⅓ innings. He said the pitch had become something he could lean on for quick outs while simultaneously improving his four-seamer.
That mechanism matters against Baltimore. Monday showed what happens when Cleveland cannot get ahead. Bibee’s adjustment was specifically designed to create earlier contact and prevent prolonged counts.

Mayo Gets A Different Invitation
Coby Mayo supplied Baltimore’s clearest warning Monday, homering twice and reaching 20 for the season. His first shot also gave him an MLB-leading 16 homers against left-handed pitching.
Tanner Bibee being right-handed immediately changes the shape of Mayo’s assignment. It does not neutralize a hitter carrying genuine power, but Cleveland no longer feeds directly into the platoon split Mayo has punished most severely.
Baltimore is also without Luis Robert Jr., who is on the injured list with a hamstring injury, while Tyler O’Neill is unlikely to return this season.

Young Makes Patience Uncomfortable
Young is 9-3 with a 3.42 ERA and 110 strikeouts, making the Orioles’ modest favorite price understandable.
His earlier comments also reveal an opening Cleveland can test. During a five-start quality-start streak, Young admitted he had been falling behind hitters and producing poor first-pitch strike numbers, surviving by competing with multiple pitches inside the zone.
That puts Steven Kwan and José Ramírez at the center of Cleveland’s route into the game. Chasing Young early helps him escape the weakness he has already identified. Forcing him to establish strikes can produce traffic before his secondary pitches become useful.
Cleveland may also regain Chase DeLauter, who is day-to-day with a wrist sprain. Stephen Vogt said Monday that DeLauter was feeling better and “trending really well.”
Plus 113 Ignores Tanner Bibee’s Reinvention
Young owns the cleaner season line, but Tanner Bibee’s record prices the wrong version of him. His sinker adjustment gives a clear reason to treat his season in two parts rather than simply accepting 5-15 at face value.
Betting lean: Guardians +113.
The risk is Cleveland’s bullpen after Monday required 5⅔ relief innings, particularly with Holderman already unavailable. But if Bibee’s sinker gets him back to the efficient innings the adjustment was built to create, Cleveland has enough value at plus money to reverse Monday’s pitching imbalance.
