Sonmez Gives Iva Jovic No Warmup Set
Iva Jovic begins her Guadalajara title defense against an opponent who has already spent 59 minutes learning exactly how these courts play.
Zeynep Sonmez used them ruthlessly. She beat Iryna Shymanovich 6-1, 6-1 on Monday, winning 59 of 87 total points and all five of her break-point opportunities. Jovic arrives directly from the US Open, where her deepest New York run ended in the fourth round against Coco Gauff.
Wednesday asks whether Jovic can establish her early-strike game before Sonmez turns that extra match of local information into something uncomfortable.
Sonmez Left Nothing Behind Her Second Serve
The most interesting number from Sonmez’s opener was not 6-1, 6-1. She won 10 of 15 second-serve points while committing no double faults. Shymanovich consequently found almost no inexpensive route into Sonmez’s service games.
That matters against Jovic because the American is particularly dangerous when she can take the return early and redirect immediately. Her ability to rob opponents of time from the baseline has become one of the defining features of her rise to No. 16.
Sonmez therefore arrives with exactly the sort of first-round service performance capable of making Jovic work for that first attacking ball.

Iva Jovic Returns to a Different Guadalajara
Jovic’s relationship with this tournament is obvious: Guadalajara produced her first WTA title last September.
But the more useful evidence comes from New York. She reached the US Open fourth round after surviving Alexandra Eala 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in more than three hours. Jovic said afterward that the match gave her confidence because both players finished with more winners than unforced errors, and she had survived a level she considered exceptionally high.
That matters Wednesday because Sonmez’s opening round offered almost no comparable adversity.
Iva Jovic has also spoken this season about learning to manage matches rather than relying solely on her ball-striking. Against Eala, that development was tested through repeated momentum changes rather than a clean statistical performance.

Five Breaks Change the Favorite’s Margin
Sonmez is ranked No. 58 and Jovic No. 16, but this is their first professional meeting. That absence of matchup history makes Monday’s return numbers more useful. Sonmez converted all five break points against Shymanovich and won 25 of the 47 points played on her opponent’s serve.
Jovic presents a substantially different service problem, but Sonmez has at least arrived with her return timing already established in Guadalajara.
The question is whether that remains enough once Jovic begins taking the ball earlier and changing direction from the baseline.
The favorite has the broader evidence. The five-game handicap asks for considerably more.
Prediction: Iva Jovic in two sets.
Betting Analysis
Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line has Jovic at -455 and Sonmez at +331. Jovic is -5 games at -120, with Sonmez +5 at -102. The total is 19.5 games, with over -116 and under -104.
Jovic’s moneyline offers little appeal at -455. Sonmez’s clean opening match and immediate familiarity with the conditions make the five-game spread more interesting than the outright market.
A 6-4, 6-4 Jovic victory would comfortably produce the expected winner while rewarding Sonmez +5.
Betting Lean: Zeynep Sonmez +5 (-102).
