Song Yadong Has UFC Shanghai And One Chance
Song Yadong has already said what Saturday means to him. “With this fight, I will get a title shot.”
That is a heavy sentence to carry into a five-round main event against Umar Nurmagomedov, particularly when the opponent averages more than four takedowns per fifteen minutes and has spent most of his UFC career making good bantamweights fight from places they did not choose.
Song enters UFC Shanghai ranked No. 6 after submitting Deiveson Figueiredo in May. Umar is No. 3, 20-1 professionally, and still trying to get back to the title shot he lost against Merab Dvalishvili.
Bookmaker Sportsbook has Nurmagomedov at -525, with Song returning at +400. Over 4.5 rounds is -235.
Song has 25 minutes to prove that 73% takedown defense means more than the name Nurmagomedov.
Song Yadong’s 73% Only Answers The First Question
UFC Stats credits Nurmagomedov with 4.03 takedowns per 15 minutes, 46% accuracy and 79% takedown defense. Song’s corresponding numbers are 0.78 takedowns per 15 minutes and 73% takedown defense.
The 73% is the number everyone will notice. The more important question is what happens after the first defended attempt.
Nurmagomedov rarely treats one failed shot as the end of an exchange. He can move from the legs to the body lock, climb toward the back, or break away into kicks before the opponent has fully reset.
Song Yadong therefore needs more than a good sprawl. He needs clean exits.

Song May Only Need One Bad Entry
Song lands 4.42 significant strikes per minute and carries nine professional knockout wins. Umar lands slightly less volume at 3.86, but with considerably higher accuracy at 56% and much lower absorption at 1.86 significant strikes per minute.
Song’s best moments usually come when opponents are forced to exchange rather than touch and move. His stance is compact, his right hand carries genuine weight, and he attacks the body well enough to make longer fights increasingly unpleasant.
The interesting question is whether the wrestling threat slows those combinations.
The Only Man To Beat Umar Left A Clue
Nurmagomedov’s only professional defeat remains the five-round decision against Dvalishvili.
The important evidence is not merely that he lost. Merab gradually increased the workload and forced Umar to spend more time striking and defending than dictating. The official numbers finished remarkably close in significant strikes, 111-104 for Dvalishvili, while the champion’s pressure became increasingly decisive across the final rounds.
Umar is considerably less comfortable when the opponent refuses to spend entire rounds reacting to him.
Song’s path therefore requires enough successful defensive sequences to create stretches where Umar becomes the fighter waiting.

Minute 21 Will Feel Very Different In Shanghai
The home crowd will be firmly behind Song. It can also turn every defended takedown and clean right hand into an invitation to do something unnecessary.
Song has already gone deep in five-round fights. He stopped Ricky Simon in the fifth and fought four hard rounds with Cory Sandhagen before a doctor stoppage. His cardio is not the concern. The question is whether his decision-making stays disciplined once the building starts reacting to every exchange.
Nurmagomedov has lived through five championship rounds against Dvalishvili and five against Cory Sandhagen.
The MMA/UFC Betting Hub and UFC Betting Guide become useful here because the price is built around repeatability. Song may own the more explosive individual moments. Umar owns the style most likely to keep asking the same question until the answer changes.
Fight Prediction
Song has a real path. His takedown defense is proven, his boxing is dangerous enough to punish lazy entries, and Shanghai gives him the emotional lift of a genuine home main event.
But Umar’s game produces too many layers. If the shot fails, the clinch may not. If the clinch fails, the kicks and range management remain. If Song begins loading up to discourage the wrestling, his own output can narrow.
The technical prediction is Umar Nurmagomedov by unanimous decision after a competitive opening half gives way to more sustained clinch and wrestling pressure over the final ten minutes.
Umar Nurmagomedov vs Song Yadong Betting Analysis
Bookmaker Sportsbook prices Umar at -525 and Song at +400. The moneyline reflects the stylistic advantage but leaves little room for value. The total is more interesting.
Over 4.5 rounds is -235, which fits both men’s durability and Song’s 73% takedown defense. Umar has gone the distance in four of his last five UFC fights, including two five-round decisions, while Song has been stopped by strikes only twice in his professional career.
Betting Lean
The lean is Over 4.5 rounds (-235).
Song is difficult enough to put away and dangerous enough on the feet to discourage reckless pursuit. Umar is more likely to win by making the fight steadily narrower rather than dramatically shorter.
