SKC Found André Luiz Just in Time for Seattle

Sporting Kansas City finally found the attacker who changes the geometry. Now Raphael Wicky has to decide how long he can use him.

André Luiz has scored four times in his first four SKC starts and produced five goal contributions in his first five appearances. Yet Wicky confirmed after Saturday’s win in Houston that André remains on a minutes restriction, alongside several teammates returning from injuries.

Seattle enters as the substantial favorite, but without Hassani Dotson through suspension, while Dejan Joveljić and Snyder Brunell are away on international duty.

Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line makes Seattle -200, Sporting KC +422 and the draw +395, with Over 3.5 -110, Under 3.5 -116, Seattle -1.5 +122 and Sporting KC +1.5 -160.

André Luiz Changed Where Defenders Look

SKC’s 31 goals remain among MLS’ lowest totals. Eleven, however, have arrived across its past four matches. André’s arrival sits directly inside that change.

Calvin Harris explained the practical consequence after Houston: when André receives the ball one-on-one, teammates expect him to beat the defender. Wicky went further, describing him as a player who can draw two defenders and release someone else.

That gives Seattle a different problem from the one suggested by SKC’s season-long scoring numbers.

Seattle Gets Healthier and Thinner

Brian Schmetzer described Seattle’s dressing room as “happy, confident and talented” after its unbeaten run reached seven matches. Yeimar’s return from a long injury absence also adds another defensive option.

But Thursday rearranges the available pieces. Dotson scored against Minnesota before collecting the yellow card that triggered his suspension. Joveljić plays for Serbia, and Brunell plays for the United States U-20s.

Wicky Has to Spend André Carefully

Wicky’s recent adjustment has been clear. Against Houston, SKC closed the center, encouraged possession wide and pressed higher when circumstances allowed. He also says the attacking roles are becoming clearer.

That structure matters more than pretending SKC’s defensive problems disappeared after one clean sheet. Sporting has conceded 63 league goals and three or more in three of its past five matches.

The +1.5 instead asks Seattle to win by two while replacing several pieces against an SKC attack that suddenly has a player capable of forcing an extra defender toward him.

André Luiz doesn’t have to play 90 minutes to complicate that. He only has to make his allotted minutes count.

Prediction: Seattle 2, Sporting Kansas City 1.

Betting Lean: Sporting Kansas City +1.5 (-160).
