Seth Jarvis Leaves Barkov More Ice

Carolina gets the banner. Florida gets the healthier top six.

The Hurricanes open their Stanley Cup defense Tuesday without Seth Jarvis, who has been placed on injured non-roster following offseason shoulder surgery. Florida arrives with Aleksander Barkov back after missing last season and Brady Tkachuk expected to return from the minor issue that ended his preseason early.

That makes a modest home price considerably less comfortable than the ceremony surrounding it.

Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line: Panthers +104, Hurricanes -120; Panthers +1.5 (-227), Hurricanes -1.5 (+196); Over 6.5 (+107), Under 6.5 (-123). Pick: Panthers +104.

Seth Jarvis Leaves More Than Goals

Carolina has known this was coming. Jarvis underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum and rotator cuff, and the Hurricanes have spent camp figuring out how to redistribute his minutes. Their own preseason assessment made the point explicitly: replacing him will probably involve several players rather than one permanent substitute.

That matters against this opponent because Florida can send Barkov, Sam Reinhart and Brady Tkachuk over the boards together.

Paul Maurice described the new combination as important enough to get immediate preseason work, while Barkov said Tkachuk’s work rate had already made him an easy addition.

Florida Brings Back Its Missing Piece

Barkov’s return changes far more than one center position. He missed the entire 2025-26 season after ACL and MCL surgery but said he entered camp with no concerns about the repaired knee. Florida then added Brady Tkachuk to a forward group already containing Reinhart, Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Bennett, and Carter Verhaeghe.

Brady’s preseason interruption does not currently point toward an opening-night absence. Maurice described him as day-to-day and said he should be ready for Tuesday.

The Banner Creates A Distraction

Carolina’s roster is hardly depleted. The defending champions retained most of the group that won the Cup, and Rod Brind’Amour used the preseason finale to get his veterans back into game conditions. His verdict was restrained: the rust had come off, but there remained “room to still get better.”

Opening night now asks Carolina to move directly from celebration to defending Florida’s reconstructed top six.

That is enough to make -120 unattractive.

The Panthers do not require superiority across 60 minutes at +104. They require the returning Barkov and new Tkachuk combination to make Jarvis’ absence matter often enough.

Prediction: Panthers 4, Hurricanes 3.

Betting lean: Panthers +104.
