Seattle Reign Made March Look Easy. August Looks Nothing Like It
Kansas City has spent five months becoming a better team than the one Seattle beat 3-0 in Spokane. Seattle has spent much of the same period discovering Maddie Mercado.
The Reign forward scored the third goal in that March meeting. On Wednesday she struck again against Racing Louisville, taking her season total to seven before Seattle eventually lost 2-1. Kansas City arrive seventh in the NWSL on 30 points. Seattle sit three points behind in eighth.
Mercado has scored seven league goals. Kansas City has already watched one of them go in. Saturday’s return to CPKC Stadium asks whether the Current can stop Seattle from finding the same spaces without sacrificing the attacking aggression that has carried them back into playoff contention.
Three Goals Came From Three Different Places
Seattle’s 3-0 win in March was not built around one dominant scorer. James-Turner opened the scoring, Ratcliffe added the second, and Mercado headed home the third. Sofia Huerta supplied two assists, while Claudia Dickey made three saves for the clean sheet.
Kansas City struggled whenever Seattle moved quickly after regaining possession. The Current’s midfield pushed forward, Seattle found runners beyond it, and Huerta repeatedly delivered from areas Kansas City failed to close.
That is the part of the first meeting worth carrying into August. Kansas City is stronger when they can keep opponents pinned back and recycle possession around the final third. Seattle already showed what happens when the first pressure is escaped cleanly.

Kansas City Scored Before Gotham Had Touched the Ball
Kansas City’s most recent defeat began almost perfectly. Amelia White scored after 22 seconds against Gotham, tying the NWSL record for the fastest regular-season goal. Croix Bethune supplied the assist. Gotham still recovered to win 2-1 through Midge Purce and Sam Kerr.
White’s goal showed the direct threat Kansas City can create before an opponent’s defensive structure settles. The rest of the match exposed the cost of not converting those early advantages into control.
Michelle Cooper also returned from a 42-day absence as a second-half substitute. Her availability gives Kansas City another runner capable of stretching Seattle’s back line rather than asking Bethune and Debinha to manufacture every opening through midfield.
The Third Goal in March Has Aged Rather Well
Maddie Mercado scored against Kansas City in March and now leads Seattle with seven goals. Her latest came in Louisville after 19 minutes. Seattle could not protect the lead, with Emma Sears scoring twice for Racing, but Mercado again found the opening before the opposition settled into its preferred shape.
Mercado does not need Seattle to dominate possession. She benefits when the Reign win the ball and attack before the defensive midfield has recovered its position. Kansas City will want fullbacks and midfielders to join the attack at home, particularly with Seattle coming off a midweek road match.
Laura Harvey has used 16 different starting lineups in 19 matches, so exactly which players surround Mercado remains less predictable than her role inside the attack.

Louisville Took More Than Three Points
Seattle played Wednesday night in Louisville and now travels directly to Kansas City for Saturday. Kansas City last played on August 14.
That recovery gap could influence the second half more than the opening exchanges. Seattle’s recent schedule has required repeated travel, while Kansas City have had a full week to prepare for the rematch.
The Soccer Betting Hub is useful here because rest, venue, and previous matchup evidence pull in different directions. The NWSL Betting Guide offers the same warning against reading the 3-0 March score as a permanent hierarchy.
Betting Analysis
Bookmaker Sportsbook lists Kansas City at -125, Seattle at +300, and the draw at +275. The total is 2.5 goals, with the over priced at -159 and the under at +119.
Kansas City’s price reflects the venue, the three-point gap in the table and Seattle’s short turnaround after Louisville.
The total is more aggressive. Seattle have scored in each of their past five league matches, while Kansas City have conceded in four straight. The first meeting produced three goals, with Kansas City contributing none.

The Favorite Wasn’t the Better Team Last Time
Kansas City should create more than it did in Spokane. White’s pace, Bethune’s passing, and Cooper’s return give the Current more ways to attack Seattle before the Reign can establish their block.
Seattle’s transition threat remains difficult to ignore. Maddie Mercado has continued producing the same kind of runs that hurt Kansas City in March, and the Current still need numbers up front to play their best football.
The fresher side gets the slight edge at home.
