Schwarber Finds Gilbert’s Dangerous Side

Philadelphia is -117 at Bookmaker Sportsbook, Seattle is +104, and the total is 6.5. The pick is Phillies moneyline -117.

This is Game 1 of a three-game series at T-Mobile Park. Philadelphia arrives at 72-58 with nine straight wins; Seattle is 62-68 after Sunday’s 19-2 loss to Chicago. Zack Wheeler faces Logan Gilbert.

Sunday could hardly have produced a sharper contrast. The Phillies trailed St. Louis 4-0 entering the ninth, scored six, and won on Kyle Schwarber’s 39th homer. Seattle allowed 17 hits and nine eighth-inning runs before using position players on the mound.

Schwarber arrives after hitting a ball 459 feet. Gilbert arrives with a home run split he would rather leave on the road.

The Same Fastball, Different Consequences

Gilbert’s 3.35 ERA looks comfortably good. His location splits are less comfortable. At home, Gilbert has a 4.01 ERA and allows 1.9 home runs per nine innings. Away from Seattle, those numbers fall to a 2.49 ERA and 0.3 homers per nine innings.

Philadelphia brings exactly the wrong lineup for loose pitches in the air. Schwarber leads MLB with 39 home runs. Bryce Harper homered Saturday, and the Phillies have scored 18 runs across their last two games despite entering Sunday’s ninth inning scoreless.

Gilbert can still miss bats at an elite rate, averaging 9.4 strikeouts per nine. The issue is what happens when Philadelphia survives the strikeout pitch and gets another fastball in the zone.

Wheeler presents fewer obvious openings, carrying a 2.92 ERA and 10.8 strikeouts per nine. His last five starts have included three outings with at least four runs allowed, including five innings and four walks against Miami last week.

Logan Gilbert delivers a fastball to Bryce Harper during a previous professional MLB game at T-Mobile Park.

How Long Do the Starters Keep This Clean?

A total of 6.5 places enormous faith in Wheeler and Gilbert. The relief numbers are less pristine. Since July 1, Philadelphia’s bullpen ranks 26th with a 4.94 ERA; Seattle ranks 29th at 5.29.

Sunday did spare some arms. Cristopher Sánchez worked 6⅔ innings for Philadelphia before Alex McFarlane handled the ninth. Seattle’s blowout eventually reached position players, limiting the damage to the core relief group.

Readers following the wider playoff picture can find more in the MLB Betting Hub and MLB Playoffs Betting Guide. Philadelphia’s nine-game streak has moved well beyond a good week; Seattle remains three games behind the final AL Wild Card entering this series.

Betting Lean

Philadelphia Phillies -117.

Gilbert gives Seattle a legitimate starting-pitching answer. Philadelphia brings Wheeler, the hotter lineup, and Schwarber directly into Gilbert’s weakest statistical split.
