Sandy Alcantara Cannot Rescue Miami Twice
Sandy Alcantara spent Wednesday night fixing somebody else’s bullpen problem. Now he gets San Diego.
Miami’s ace threw 101 pitches Monday, volunteered for relief duty Wednesday and recorded his first career save. That was admirable. It was also necessary because Pete Fairbanks and Anthony Bender are finished for the season and Miami’s late innings suddenly resemble an audition.
Sunday brings Alcantara back for his scheduled start against Walker Buehler. Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line makes San Diego -133, Miami +117, with Padres -1.5 at +167 and the total at 8.
I want the plus money attached to San Diego’s bullpen advantage. The pick is Padres -1.5 at +167.
Sandy Alcantara Just Became His Own Bullpen
Miami’s predicament is a wonderful absurdity. Sandy Alcantara leads the majors with 206 innings, yet the Marlins were desperate enough Wednesday that their rotation workhorse put on his cleats, walked to the bullpen, and volunteered for the ninth.
“If I’m here, I’m going to do everything I can to help the team win,” Alcantara said. Sunday tests the cost of that generosity.
The save required only three batters, but this isn’t about pretending nine pitches wrecked Alcantara. It is about what happens after he leaves.
Bender’s absence has been brutal. Miami had a 3.38 bullpen ERA when he went on the IL; since then, that figure has ballooned to 5.08. Now Fairbanks is gone too.

Buehler Has Already Seen Stammen’s Hook
Walker Buehler does not deserve blind faith either. His last start ended after 2⅓ innings, although the bizarre second mound-visit mistake forced his removal. The more revealing part came before that: Craig Stammen originally walked out intending to remove Buehler with the bases loaded because he preferred Kyle Hart against CJ Abrams.
Buehler later admitted he hadn’t pitched well enough in the inning to remain anyway. That tells us something useful about Sunday.
Stammen is managing September, not Buehler’s feelings. If traffic builds, San Diego has little incentive to let its starter pitch another inning just because he wants to.

San Diego Can Turn Five Into Nine
That’s the bet. Sandy Alcantara can absolutely outpitch Buehler. At +117, Miami will tempt anyone stopping the analysis at the probable-pitchers graphic. I’m looking four innings farther.
Miami has lost its closer and primary setup man. San Diego can move from Buehler into a relief structure containing Mason Miller, Adrian Morejon and Yuki Matsui, with Monday’s off day removing much of the incentive to preserve arms.
That difference becomes particularly ugly if Alcantara leaves a close game. San Diego has also scored at least eight runs in three straight games entering the weekend, while Xander Bogaerts and Jackson Merrill have both driven the current surge.
Alcantara may win the first five innings and still watch the game escape without him. For once, he cannot walk down to the bullpen and save it himself.
Prediction: San Diego Padres 5, Miami Marlins 2.
Betting Analysis
Bookmaker Sportsbook’s opening line offers Padres -1.5 at +167.
San Diego -133 is perfectly defensible. I prefer getting paid for the possibility that a competitive Alcantara start becomes something much less competitive once Miami starts asking questions of its depleted bullpen.
Betting Lean
San Diego Padres -1.5 +167.
