Sánchez Inherits Philadelphia’s Bullpen Problem
Cristopher Sánchez has one job before Philadelphia’s elimination game becomes uncomfortable: keep Don Mattingly away from his bullpen.
Sánchez brings a 2.91 ERA, 231 strikeouts and 207⅔ innings into Game 2. Behind him sits the problem. Jhoan Duran threw 27 pitches across two innings Tuesday, and Philadelphia can scarcely afford another afternoon that reaches its relief corps early.
Mattingly said it himself: “Momentum starts with your starting pitcher.” Today, survival might too.
Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line: Phillies -113, Braves +100; Phillies -1.5 (+150), Braves +1.5 (-173); Over 7 (-114), Under 7 (+102). Pick: Phillies -113.
Sánchez Can Postpone The Dangerous Part
Sánchez’s 33 starts averaged 6.1 innings, and his 207⅔ innings ranked among baseball’s heaviest workloads. His own description of today’s assignment was considerably less dramatic: “Just keep focused on what we have to do and follow the game plan.”
Good. Drama is precisely what Philadelphia can do without. Atlanta’s lineup presents enough right-handed damage to punish mistakes, but Sánchez allowed only three earned runs across his two regular-season starts against the Braves.

Mahle Has Been Waiting Nine Years
Atlanta’s counterargument is nasty. Tyler Mahle has never pitched in the postseason despite making 168 major-league starts. Since arriving in Atlanta, he has gone 4-1 with a 1.99 ERA across nine starts. Walt Weiss called his work “top-of-the-rotation type stuff” and said, “I’m not sure we’re here without him.”
Mahle also brings a structural advantage Sánchez does not: Atlanta can reach a bullpen Weiss arranged specifically for October, with Raisel Iglesias, Dylan Lee, Didier Fuentes and the recently returned Robert Suarez among its late options.

Seven Innings Could Decide Everything
That is why laying -1.5 with Philadelphia is unnecessary bravado.
The Phillies are missing Luis Arraez with an ankle sprain, and their offense entered October after posting a .660 OPS in September. This bet lives with Sánchez.
If he hands Mattingly six or seven useful innings, Philadelphia can compress the dangerous bullpen bridge and put its season into a manageable number of late outs. If Mahle matches him, Atlanta’s relief depth becomes increasingly unpleasant.
At -113, I’ll pay for Sánchez to postpone that conversation.
Prediction: Phillies 4, Braves 2.
Betting lean: Phillies -113.
