San Jose Earthquakes vs LA Galaxy Prediction: Can Preston Judd Reignite the Cali Clásico?

San Jose spent the opening months of the season turning heads. Now they need to prove the early surge was not merely a springtime flare.

The Earthquakes return to Stanford Stadium after their heaviest defeat of the campaign, a 4-0 home loss to Orlando City that punctured much of the confidence accumulated during their historically strong start. Bruce Arena’s side remain second in the Western Conference with 32 points from 16 matches, but three defeats in their last four games have introduced the first genuine tremor beneath an otherwise impressive season.

The LA Galaxy arrive to San Jose Earthquakes vs LA Galaxy with different problems.

They have lost both league matches since the World Cup break, conceding six goals while scoring once against LAFC and St. Louis CITY SC. Their 5-7-5 record leaves them outside the Western Conference playoff positions, and a third defeat in nine days would deepen the feeling that their season is drifting.

That creates a Cali Clásico with bruises on both sides. San Jose are trying to stop a wobble. The Galaxy are trying to stop a slide.

What Happened in the Previous California Clasico?

The most recent California Clásico ended in a 1-1 draw at Stanford Stadium on June 28, 2025.

San Jose took the lead in the 16th minute when Mark-Anthony Kaye found Beau Leroux near the edge of the penalty area. Leroux took a touch before driving his shot into the top-right corner.

The Galaxy responded in the 70th minute. Marco Reus exchanged passes with Matheus Nascimento, broke through the San Jose defense, and reacted first after goalkeeper Daniel saved his initial effort. Reus collected the loose ball and rolled the equalizer into the bottom corner.

That result extended the Galaxy’s unbeaten away sequence against San Jose to eight matches across all competitions. LA had recorded six wins and two draws during that run, scoring 20 goals and conceding 10.

The historical record also leans towards Los Angeles. The Galaxy lead the regular-season series 40-29-18, although only one goal separates the clubs across their regular-season meetings played in Northern California.

Preston Judd Is Carrying the Story

Timo Werner brings the international profile. Marco Reus brings the résumé. Preston Judd brings the goals.

The San Jose striker has scored 11 times and supplied two assists in 15 league appearances, already establishing a career-high total and placing himself firmly among the leading contenders in the MLS Golden Boot race. He also leads all American players in the league’s scoring chart.

Those numbers are not being padded by penalties or late cameos against exhausted defenders.

Judd has repeatedly given San Jose a central target around whom their aggressive attacking structure can operate. He occupies centre-backs, attacks early deliveries and turns imperfect service into genuine danger through movement rather than decoration.

His contract extension through the 2028-29 season reflects how dramatically his standing has changed. Bruce Arena has not merely found a useful striker. He has found the focal point of a team that entered the season with relatively modest expectations and then surged towards the top of the West.

This matchup places Judd against a Galaxy defence missing significant personnel.

Jakob Glesnes and Emiro Garcés are suspended, while João Klauss and Erik Thommy are unavailable through injury. The absences of Glesnes and Garcés are particularly important because they reduce LA’s options in the centre of defence against one of the league’s most productive penalty-area forwards.

Timo Werner breaks behind the LA Galaxy defense and crosses towards Preston Judd for San Jose.

San Jose Must Repair the Damage Quickly

The 4-0 defeat against Orlando was not simply an unfortunate scoreline. San Jose looked unusually vulnerable when possession turned over and struggled to protect the spaces surrounding their defensive line. Once Orlando established a lead, the Earthquakes became stretched and increasingly easy to attack through the middle.

That performance was particularly jarring because San Jose had previously built their season around organisation, direct attacking and efficient finishing.

Their overall record remains excellent at 10 wins, four defeats and two draws. They have scored 34 league goals while conceding 19, leaving them with one of the strongest goal differences in the Western Conference. Their issue is not the body of work.

It is the direction of travel. San Jose has won only once in league play since late April and has now lost three of their last four matches. Arena therefore faces a delicate tactical choice.

He can ask the Earthquakes to attack the Galaxy immediately, using Judd and Werner to press a reshuffled defence before it settles.

Or he can begin more cautiously, restoring defensive distances before committing numbers forward. The rivalry atmosphere may make restraint difficult.

Timo Werner Changes the Shape of the Attack

Werner returned from injury against Orlando and should give San Jose a different route into the penalty area. His value is not limited to finishing.

He stretches defensive lines, attacks the space between full-back and centre-back and forces opponents to defend while retreating. That movement can create the pockets Judd needs to establish position closer to goal.

The partnership is still developing. Werner naturally wants to run beyond the defence. Judd is most effective when occupying the central channel and turning service into first-time chances. Used properly, those movements should complement one another.

The danger comes when both forwards attack the same space. San Jose must avoid becoming a team that simply throws crosses towards Judd while hoping Werner collects the second ball. The Galaxy may be depleted defensively, but predictable possession will allow them to crowd the penalty area and protect goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski.

The sharper route is to move LA’s back line horizontally before finding Judd centrally. That is where Werner’s acceleration matters.

Marco Reus receives possession between the lines during the San Jose Earthquakes vs LA Galaxy Cali Clasico.

Marco Reus Must Create Without Gabriel Pec

The Galaxy are still adapting after Gabriel Pec’s transfer to Cruzeiro. Pec remains their leading goal contributor for the season despite leaving the club, illustrating how much attacking production has disappeared from the lineup. Marco Reus now leads LA’s active players with four goals and five assists.

Reus also scored the equalizer in the previous meeting. His ability to receive between midfield and defense remains the clearest route through which LA can trouble San Jose. The Earthquakes occasionally leave space in front of their center-backs when their midfield presses forward, particularly after losing possession in wide areas.

Reus does not need to outrun anyone to exploit that opening. He needs enough time to turn.

The Galaxy must then provide movement ahead of him. Joseph Paintsil can attack from wider positions, but João Klauss’ foot injury removes a recognised central reference point. Newly acquired Kyōgo Furuhashi may eventually supply precisely that kind of movement, although his immediate availability and role should not be assumed until confirmed by the club.

Without Klauss, the Galaxy may have to produce danger through rotation rather than a conventional striker occupying the center-backs. That places even more creative weight on Reus.

The Galaxy’s Schedule Cannot Be Ignored

This is LA’s third match in nine days. They faced LAFC on July 17, hosted St. Louis on July 22 and now travel north for the Clásico on July 25.

The physical strain matters, particularly for a side attempting to replace suspended defenders and rebuild attacking relationships following a major transfer.

San Jose also played in midweek, but the Galaxy’s defensive shortage makes rotation more complicated.

Fatigue does not always reveal itself through slower running.

It often appears through delayed decisions, poorly defended second balls and centre-backs stepping forward half a second too late. Those are precisely the moments Judd has punished throughout the season.

The longer the match remains level, the more San Jose should be able to test LA’s concentration around the box.

Can the Galaxy’s Road Record Survive Another Cali Clásico?

The Galaxy’s recent record in Northern California is striking. They are unbeaten in eight consecutive away matches against San Jose across all competitions, including four straight without defeat at Stanford Stadium.

That record deserves respect, but it should not be treated as proof that the present team owns some permanent psychological advantage.

The current Galaxy side enters with consecutive defeats, defensive suspensions and an attack adjusting to the departure of its leading contributor. San Jose, despite the Orlando result, remain 12 points above LA in the Western Conference standings.

Betting Analysis

San Jose opened at Bookmaker Sportsbook as a modest home favorite at -115, with the Galaxy available at +272 and the draw priced at +305. That price reflects two competing arguments.

The Earthquakes have the superior record, the more productive striker and a clearer tactical advantage against LA’s depleted central defence.

The Galaxy possess the stronger recent history in this fixture and enough individual quality through Reus and Paintsil to exploit the defensive openings San Jose showed against Orlando.

For readers using the Soccer Betting Hub, this is a useful example of why a team’s most recent result cannot be read in isolation. San Jose were poor against Orlando, but their broader attacking numbers and LA’s defensive absences still make the hosts the more logical side.

The Soccer Data Betting guide also applies naturally here. The headline records point towards San Jose, but the underlying match context provides the stronger case: Judd’s production, the Galaxy’s center-back shortage and LA’s third game in nine days all favor the Earthquakes.

The total is set at 3.5 goals, with the under favoured at -134 and the over returning +107.

San Jose’s 4-0 loss and the Galaxy’s six goals conceded since the break make the over tempting. However, rivalry matches do not always follow the cleanest statistical path. LA may protect their altered defence with a more conservative shape, while San Jose should be wary of exposing themselves as aggressively as they did against Orlando. The more direct position is the home moneyline.

San Jose Earthquakes vs LA Galaxy Prediction

San Jose’s recent form creates understandable hesitation, but the matchup is considerably more favorable than Wednesday’s result suggests.

The Earthquakes should have more success establishing Judd inside the Galaxy penalty area, particularly with Glesnes and Garcés suspended. Werner’s movement can stretch LA’s replacement defensive unit, while the Galaxy’s demanding schedule may become increasingly visible after halftime.

Reus gives Los Angeles a route back into the match and makes a clean sheet difficult to trust. The decisive figure, however, should be Judd.
