Saint-Maximin Finds FC Cincinnati Missing Its Compass

FC Cincinnati still have home field, Kévin Denkey and one of MLS’s most productive home attacks. What they will not have Saturday is Evander.

The Brazilian is suspended for yellow-card accumulation, while Obinna Nwobodo also sits after Wednesday’s red card. Charlotte are hardly arriving intact themselves: captain Ashley Westwood and left back David Schnegg are both suspended.

That leaves Cincinnati without the player who normally decides where attacks begin, and Charlotte FCwithout two important pieces of their defensive structure. The difference is that Charlotte still bring Allan Saint-Maximin into the space Cincinnati are trying to reorganize.

Bookmaker Sportsbook’s opening line makes Cincinnati +110, Charlotte +199 and the draw +299, with Cincinnati -0.5 at +109 and Charlotte +0.5 at -131. The betting lean is Charlotte +0.5 at -131.

Evander Leaves More Than Eleven Goals

Pat Noonan was unusually blunt about the adjustment. “We’re not replacing him,” he said of Evander. “Nobody needs to try to do what Evander does, because nobody can.”

That matters because FC Cincinnati’s problem is not simply replacing goals or assists. Evander determines where possession accelerates. Without him, Pavel Bucha and Cincinnati’s remaining midfielders inherit more responsibility for progressing the ball into areas where Denkey can attack rather than merely receive with defenders already set.

FC Cincinnati have averaged 2.82 goals per MLS home game, second-best in the league, so the attack does not suddenly become toothless. But the usual map has disappeared.

Saint-Maximin Changes FC Cincinnati’s Defensive Math

Noonan’s comments about Saint-Maximin reveal where Cincinnati expect Charlotte’s threat.

He highlighted the winger’s one-on-one ability, pace, disguise and capacity to attack once Charlotte switch play toward the left. That is especially relevant with Nwobodo absent because Cincinnati lose one of their most natural midfield ball-winners before the back line is exposed.

Saint-Maximin has already supplied four assists in seven Charlotte appearances. His value here is broader than the final pass. Every successful isolation can pull a second defender toward him, creating lanes for Pep Biel, Liel Abada or Idan Toklomati.

Charlotte’s attack does not require long spells of possession to become dangerous. That makes Cincinnati’s reshuffled midfield more consequential.

Westwood’s Absence Cuts Both Ways

Charlotte FC is also losing an organizer. Westwood’s suspension removes experience from the center of midfield, while Schnegg’s absence changes the left side behind Saint-Maximin. Smith has alternatives, including Luca de la Torre and Djibril Diani, but the substitutions change Charlotte’s spacing and ball recovery.

His latest concern after the Montreal game was how easily Charlotte allowed pressure into their defensive third and how often they lost second balls.

That is where Cincinnati’s home environment still matters. A direct game built around Denkey can create ugly possessions rather than elegant ones, and Charlotte may spend portions of Saturday defending territory rather than controlling it.

But the matchup still favors Charlotte’s ability to create transition chances against a FC Cincinnati midfield missing two central reference points.

Prediction: FC Cincinnati 1, Charlotte FC 2.

Betting Analysis

Bookmaker Sportsbook’s opening line asks Cincinnati to win outright at +110 despite the simultaneous absences of Evander and Nwobodo.

Charlotte +0.5 at -131 protects the draw while retaining exposure to the more settled attacking structure. With Charlotte unbeaten in six MLS matches and Saint-Maximin offering a direct route into Cincinnati’s rearranged defensive shape, paying the extra price for draw protection is justified.

Betting Lean

Charlotte FC +0.5 at -131.
