Rybakina Finds Coco Gauff Before She Settles

Coco Gauff and Elena Rybakina both spent Wednesday recovering from first sets they would rather not repeat.

Gauff gave Mirra Andreeva the opener 6-2 after struggling to find the ball and leaking errors from the forehand. Rybakina lost her first set 6-3 to Qinwen Zheng, admitting the unfamiliar midday sun and shadows became part of an internal battle. Both recovered. Thursday asks which one settles before the other can make the early damage count.

Coco Gauff’s Forehand Cannot Afford Nine Minutes.

Andreeva broke Gauff immediately on Wednesday and was two breaks ahead within nine minutes. Gauff double-faulted twice early, while Andreeva repeatedly found success directing balls toward the American’s forehand. Gauff eventually escaped 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-2 after saving two match points.

The recovery was impressive. The opening remains relevant. Rybakina does not arrive needing an invented tactical formula. Her most recent match against Coco Gauff already supplied one piece of evidence: in Toronto last month, she generated 11 break points, converted four, and won 55.3% of her return points against Gauff’s second serve in a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line has Rybakina at -117 and Gauff at -105. Rybakina is -0.5 games at -109, with Gauff +0.5 at -112. Pick: Elena Rybakina -0.5 (-109).

One Rybakina Problem Disappears After Sunset

Rybakina’s own explanation for her difficult start against Zheng deserves attention because Thursday changes the circumstances.

Her quarterfinal was her first midday match of the tournament. Rybakina said she found herself distracted by the sun, shadows, and other small things before pushing the negative thoughts aside. She eventually won 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, taking the final three games after facing a break point at 3-4 in the decider.

Thursday’s semifinal is scheduled for the night session. That removes one problem Rybakina specifically identified, rather than asking us to speculate about another. Her left ankle, which forced her retirement in Cincinnati, has also carried her through five completed matches in New York without a reported recurrence.

The WTA Betting Guide provides additional context for near pick’em matches where the game handicap effectively asks the bettor to choose the winner.

Toronto Exposed Gauff’s Second-Serve Margin

The head-to-head is only 1-1, so it offers little value to pretend it shows a broad historical pattern. Their Toronto semifinal is much more useful because it happened less than a month ago.

Gauff won the first set 7-5. Rybakina then took the next two 6-2, 6-2. Afterward, Rybakina said she had rushed on serve late in the opener and knew she needed to start the second set differently. She also emphasized choosing her serving targets and taking the opportunities she received.

Gauff enters Thursday with strong evidence of resilience. She has won 11 straight matches and 20 of her last 24 three-setters at Grand Slams dating back to 2023. Against Andreeva, she went from two match points away from elimination to losing only two games in the deciding set.

That makes the opening phase more interesting, not less. Rybakina has already shown she can recover against Gauff after losing a first set. Gauff has just survived an even deeper hole against Andreeva. Neither player needs the first set to win Thursday.

But Rybakina’s latest slow start came with a specific environmental explanation that disappears under the lights, while Gauff’s involved the same forehand and double-fault pressure opponents have repeatedly tried to expose.

At essentially pick’em prices, that is enough separation.

Elena Rybakina -0.5 games (-109) is the betting lean.
