Rodriguez Returns Where Innings Get Expensive

Eduardo Rodriguez has not pitched in a major-league game for a month. Naturally, Arizona is bringing him back to Coors Field.

The left-hander returns from an oblique strain with a 2.62 ERA and a postseason race still faintly breathing. Colorado counters with Tanner Gordon, whose 3-7 record disguises a 3.70 ERA and a much less accommodating assignment than the standings suggest.

Rodriguez does not have to solve Coors for seven innings. Arizona first has to discover how many innings it actually owns.

Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line has Arizona -186 and Colorado +163, with the total at 10.5. My pick is the Diamondbacks -1.5 at -115, with Arizona winning 6-3.

Rodriguez Returns Without a Runway

Rodriguez’s season was interrupted just as he had become one of Arizona’s most dependable starters.

He returns carrying a 15-6 record, 2.62 ERA and 1.07 WHIP. The question Thursday is workload rather than résumé.

Arizona has already handled returning starters carefully this month. At Coors, that restraint matters because an early exit transfers innings into the least forgiving pitching environment in baseball.

Rodriguez’s command offers the counterweight. He has walked only 39 in 165 innings while striking out 157. Free runners turn Coors ugly faster. Rodriguez has spent the season refusing to donate many.

Tanner Gordon Makes His Record Look Guilty

Tanner Gordon is 3-7. That is the least interesting number attached to him. His 3.70 ERA and 1.18 WHIP describe a pitcher who has given Colorado substantially better work than the win-loss column suggests. Arizona therefore is not buying a free afternoon simply because the opponent has already crossed 100 losses.

Gordon’s problem is what happens when contact survives him. Ketel Marte, Corbin Carroll, and Geraldo Perdomo enter an environment where gaps grow enormous and ordinary fly balls acquire ambitions.

Arizona’s Bullpen Inherits the Altitude

Rodriguez’s return creates an unusual pricing problem. At full workload, a 2.62 ERA starter opposite Gordon makes Arizona’s advantage straightforward. On a controlled return from an oblique injury, part of that advantage belongs to innings that may never arrive.

That pushes greater responsibility onto an Arizona bullpen already navigating the final week of September.

The dangerous number Thursday is not Rodriguez’s ERA. It is his pitch count.

Minus 115 Makes That Risk Affordable

Arizona -186 asks bettors to pay heavily despite Rodriguez’s uncertain workload. The run line offers a better expression.

If Rodriguez’s command survives the layoff, Arizona gets the stronger starting window. If his afternoon ends early, the Diamondbacks still possess the offensive advantage required to create separation at Coors.

At -1.5 (-115), that is the version worth buying.
