Rodriguez Puts Texas’ Right Side Under Pressure
Texas finally has Josh Jung back. Arizona immediately gets to test how much that changes against one of baseball’s better left-handed starters.
Eduardo Rodriguez enters Sunday at 15-5 with a 2.55 ERA, while Cal Quantrill brings an 8-5 record and 2.89 ERA for Texas. The matchup turns on a simple question: does Jung’s return give the Rangers enough right-handed damage to prevent Rodriguez from dictating their lineup?
Bookmaker Sportsbook’s opening line makes Texas +122 and Arizona -138, with Over 8 at -113, Under 8 at +100, Texas +1.5 (-172) and Arizona -1.5 (+149).
Pick: Arizona -138.
Jung Changes Rodriguez’s Comfortable Side
Jung returned Saturday after missing nearly two months with a left calf strain and immediately restored another right-handed bat to the middle of Texas’ options. He entered the weekend hitting .294 with nine home runs, and his return matters particularly against Rodriguez because Texas had been leaning heavily on left-handed bats including Corey Seager, Brandon Nimmo and Joc Pederson.
There is uncertainty around Pederson for Sunday. He left Saturday after being hit on the wrist, and no confirmed Sunday availability was available during research. That distinction matters against a left-hander: if Pederson sits, Texas loses a dangerous bat but gains an obvious opportunity to construct a more right-handed lineup around Jung, Wyatt Langford, Jake Burger and Ezequiel Duran.

Quantrill Has One Awkward Split
Quantrill’s 2.89 ERA gives Texas a legitimate counterweight, and his latest start offered another reason to trust his workload. He worked six innings against Seattle, allowing three runs while Texas kept its bullpen from carrying the afternoon.
Arizona presents a less comfortable shape. The Diamondbacks can surround switch-hitters Ketel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo with Corbin Carroll from the left side and Nolan Arenado from the right. Carroll’s recent back discomfort is no longer merely theoretical availability: he returned Friday and remained involved Saturday.
That variety matters against a pitcher who depends more on contact management than overpowering hitters. Quantrill can keep Arizona on the ground, but the Diamondbacks can alter handedness throughout the order without sacrificing their primary offensive threats.

Eovaldi Changed Sunday’s Bullpen Math
Texas also enters Sunday with a bullpen wrinkle that did not exist earlier in the week. Nathan Eovaldi returned from right elbow inflammation Saturday and supplied 2⅔ innings in relief, his first major-league appearance since August 7. That helped Texas navigate the middle innings, but it also makes another substantial Eovaldi workload Sunday unlikely.
Arizona’s bullpen carries a different advantage if Rodriguez provides length. Jonathan Loáisiga owns a 2.43 ERA, Juan Morillo a 2.33 ERA and Taylor Clarke a 2.42 ERA, giving Torey Lovullo multiple late-inning routes rather than one obvious bridge.
That is where -138 becomes playable. Quantrill can keep Texas close, but Arizona has the deeper combination of starter quality, lineup flexibility and late-inning options.
Prediction: Diamondbacks 4, Rangers 2.
Betting Lean: Arizona -138. Rodriguez forces Texas to prove that Jung’s return materially changes its matchup against left-handed pitching, while Arizona can attack Quantrill without restructuring its lineup around one platoon advantage.
