Red Sox vs Dodgers Prediction: Los Angeles Has Ten Hits, Two Losses And One Game Left To Explain It

The Dodgers collected ten hits on Saturday. Boston collected four. Los Angeles still lost. That is the sort of result that stays in a dugout longer than the final out.

The Red Sox now lead the three-game Red Sox vs Dodgers series 2-0 after following Friday’s 9-4 comeback with a 3-2 win on Saturday. They beat Los Angeles with an offensive eruption and then beat it again while producing almost nothing beyond two Ceddanne Rafaela home runs and one decisive eighth-inning sequence.

Sunday is not merely an opportunity for the Dodgers to avoid a sweep. It is their final chance to prove this series has been frustrating rather than revealing.

Saturday Kept Giving Los Angeles Chances

The Dodgers did not spend Saturday chasing the game from a distance. They spent it wasting opportunities within reach.

Teoscar Hernández’s two-run homer gave Los Angeles a 2-1 lead in the second inning. Rafaela answered with his second home run of the night in the third, and the score remained tied until the eighth. The Dodgers finished with ten hits, left seven runners aboard, and failed to score after Hernández’s swing.

That is the uncomfortable part. Boston did not bury them. It waited.

Andruw Monasterio opened the eighth with a ground-rule double. Jarren Duran followed, and Connor Wong’s double-play grounder brought home the go-ahead run. It was hardly a majestic rally. It was enough.

Los Angeles had spent the evening producing more traffic. Boston found the one inning that paid.

Rafaela Has Turned Every Mistake Into A Warning

Ceddanne Rafaela entered the series as one of the more dangerous hitters in a deeper Boston lineup. He now carries the story.

His first home run came in the opening inning. His second erased the Dodgers’ lead two frames later. Two swings changed the emotional shape of the game without requiring Boston to build sustained pressure around them.

That matters in Sunday’s matchup because Emmet Sheehan cannot afford to treat the lower half of Boston’s order as a place to recover.

The Red Sox have spent this series punishing moments rather than dominating entire games. Friday’s five-run seventh changed the opener. Saturday needed two Rafaela swings and one productive out.

Los Angeles has repeatedly reached the point where the game appears manageable. Boston keeps making that point disappear.

Sheehan Must Stop The Series From Reaching The Bullpen Early

Emmet Sheehan enters at 4-7 with a 4.95 ERA. The assignment is not simply to outpitch Jake Bennett. It is to give Dave Roberts enough length that Sunday does not become another contest decided by which bullpen reaches the final nine outs with fewer bruises.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto absorbed eight innings Saturday, which protected most of the Dodgers’ relief corps. That is the good news.

The less comfortable news is that Los Angeles still lost a game in which its starter allowed only four hits and worked deep enough to remove almost every managerial excuse.

Sheehan does not need to replicate Yamamoto’s outing. He does need to keep Boston from creating the kind of middle-inning pressure that forced Friday’s game open. A walk before Rafaela. A poor pitch with two outs. One inning allowed to continue beyond the point where it should have ended. That has been enough for Boston all weekend.

Bennett Gives Boston A Different Kind Of Pressure

Jake Bennett arrives with a 6-4 record and a 2.74 ERA, making him the third consecutive left-handed starter Los Angeles will face in this series.

His value is not rooted in overwhelming hitters with one obvious weapon. It comes from making innings difficult to accelerate.

The Dodgers have enough right-handed power to challenge him, but Saturday showed that contact alone will not solve the problem. Los Angeles produced ten hits and still struggled to connect one successful plate appearance to the next.

Bennett’s task is therefore straightforward in theory and unpleasant in practice. Avoid the free baserunner before the middle of the order. Keep the ball away from the damage zones. Force Los Angeles to string the inning together rather than allowing one swing to rescue it.

Contreras Changes The Shape Of Boston’s Lineup

Willson Contreras remains the largest uncertainty entering Sunday. He was removed from Friday’s opener after a 95.4 mph fastball struck his helmet near the left ear. Boston moved Nick Sogard to first base and inserted Anthony Seigler at second after Contreras left the game.

His absence would remove a hitter who entered Friday batting .289 with a .944 OPS, 23 home runs and 67 RBIs. It would also force Boston to rearrange both the defensive alignment and the centre of the batting order for the second time in three days.

The Red Sox have already shown they can survive without a complete lineup. That does not make the loss insignificant. Against a Dodgers club priced to respond, every missing source of power narrows Boston’s margin.

Boston’s Bullpen Has Not Paid For The Series Lead

The Red Sox enter Sunday with one of the more important situational advantages. They did not have to empty the bullpen Saturday.

Justin Slaten handled the eighth without allowing a baserunner. Aroldis Chapman followed with a clean ninth for his 27th save. Boston reached the end of a one-run game without extending either reliever beyond a single inning.

That gives interim manager Chad Tracy options if Bennett reaches the middle innings with the game attached.

The Dodgers should also have most of their bullpen available after Yamamoto’s eight-inning start, but their late-game problem has been different.

They have not reached the bullpen with enough scoreboard leverage. Two games into the series, Los Angeles has repeatedly created opportunities but hasn’t converted enough before Boston’s strongest relievers arrive.

The Series Has Exposed More Than The Records

Los Angeles still leads the NL West at 69-42. Boston is 59-51, third in the AL East and carrying a four-game winning streak into the finale. The standings still identify the Dodgers as the stronger club. This weekend has shown how little protection that offers over nine innings.

Readers using the MLB Playoffs Betting Guide should recognize the structural problem with early World Series prices. Futures numbers reward star power, depth and the ability to survive a six-month schedule. They do not always capture the smaller failures that decide postseason-style games: runners left aboard, one defensive decision, one productive out or one bullpen reaching the eighth with a lead worth protecting.

The Dodgers have looked like the deeper team. Boston has played like the sharper one.

Red Sox vs Dodgers Betting Prediction

Los Angeles is priced at Bookmaker Sportsbook as though the sweep threat should produce a forceful response. That is reasonable.

Sheehan works behind the more dangerous lineup, the Dodgers protected their bullpen Saturday and Boston may again be without Contreras. The Dodgers have also generated enough traffic to suggest the offence is closer to breaking through than the two defeats imply.

The concern is that Boston has stopped waiting for ideal innings. Rafaela has punished isolated mistakes. The bullpen has protected narrow margins. Bennett gives the Red Sox another left-handed starter capable of forcing Los Angeles to construct runs rather than expecting them to arrive through reputation.

The Dodgers should avoid the sweep. The price leaves little room for another evening of stranded runners.
