Quinn Mathews Gets No Soft Landing Here

Betting Lean: Pittsburgh Pirates -111

Pittsburgh is -111, St. Louis -102 and the total sits at seven.

The Pirates are the pick.

Quinn Mathews gets another major-league start six days after Philadelphia scored seven runs and collected 10 hits against him in five innings. Pittsburgh is hardly the Phillies offensively, but the price asks Mathews to rebound while the Cardinals are patching both their rotation and lineup.

Two Starters Disappeared in Two Days

Mathews is starting because St. Louis lost Andre Pallante to elbow inflammation and Hunter Dobbins to forearm tightness during the same Philadelphia series. His first assignment after that disruption went badly.

Mathews needed 28 pitches in the opening inning and later admitted he “didn’t do a great job executing.” Oliver Marmol identified the central problem more precisely: Mathews fell behind hitters, allowing an experienced Philadelphia lineup to dictate at-bats.

Pittsburgh can be inconsistent, yet Oneil Cruz is back from the injured list and recently supplied the only run in a 1-0 win at San Diego by homering off Mason Miller, who had not allowed one in more than a year.

The MLB Betting Hub angle rests less on Pittsburgh’s overall offense than on whether Mathews can stop creating favorable counts before his secondary stuff has a chance to work.

Five Walks Keep Jones Complicated

Jared Jones does not make the other side spotless. He walked a career-high five Dodgers over four innings in his last start, allowing two runs while throwing enough pitches to leave before the fifth. His previous outing had been much cleaner: five innings and one earned run against Boston.

That volatility is why Pittsburgh is barely favored despite the much wider gap between the starting pitchers’ ERAs.

St. Louis also enters with reduced offensive depth. Masyn Winn remains on the injured list with a fractured thumb, and Blaze Jordan injured his ankle Thursday after hitting a three-run homer. Marmol expects Jordan to miss time.

For readers tracking the shrinking late-season margin through the MLB Playoffs Betting Guide, neither club has much runway left.

Seven Runs Makes Every Walk Louder

The Under 7 at Bookmaker Sportsbook is tempting, but Jones’ control and Mathews’ small major-league sample introduce too much uncertainty.

At nearly identical moneyline prices, Pittsburgh gets the starter with the stronger underlying case and faces a rookie coming directly from his roughest outing.

Prediction: Pirates 4-3 Cardinals
