Potapova Has Stopped Starting Over

Anastasia Potapova enters Monday with a tactical problem she has already come close to solving this season. She took the opening set 6-1 from Mirra Andreeva in the Linz final before Andreeva changed the match and won in three. This time, Potapova arrives with something different behind her tennis: a familiar coach and a growing conviction that she no longer needs to reinvent herself when a match turns difficult.

That matters against Andreeva, whose variety is built to provoke exactly those adjustments.

Bookmaker Sportsbook prices Andreeva at -833 and Potapova at +536. Potapova is +5.5 games at -102, with Andreeva -5.5 at -119. Pick: Anastasia Potapova +5.5 (-102).

Doronina Has Removed Some Noise

Potapova split with Henner Nehles before the US Open and reunited with Irina Doronina, who coached her earlier in her career. Potapova described Doronina as someone who knows her exceptionally well and said the reunion already feels natural.

The timing is significant. Potapova has just beaten Amanda Anisimova 6-2, 7-5, saving 13 of 16 break points while absorbing the American’s power. She called maturity an important part of her improvement this season.

Against Andreeva, that stability will be tested differently. Potapova wants to establish pace early and prevent rallies from becoming tactical puzzles. Andreeva can alter height, direction and rhythm, forcing an aggressive opponent to decide repeatedly whether to attack immediately or construct another ball.

Andreeva Can Change the Question

Andreeva surrendered only six games across her first two matches before Nikola Bartunkova finally made her uncomfortable in the third round. Andreeva still won 6-2, 7-6(5), but US Open reporting noted that nerves entered the equation after those near-perfect opening performances. Coach Conchita Martinez responded by reinforcing trust in the game that has already carried Andreeva to six WTA titles and the Roland Garros championship this season.

That is the danger for Potapova. Andreeva doesn’t need to rely on a single repeated pattern. If Potapova begins controlling exchanges with pace, Andreeva can extend the rally. If Potapova settles behind the baseline, Andreeva can change angles and use more variation. Her ability to make an opponent solve different problems within the same set is precisely what threatens the +5.5 spread.

The WTA Betting Guide provides additional context for game handicaps where an underdog can lose comfortably without surrendering the required margin.

Linz Left Potapova One Clue

Their Linz meeting matters because Potapova demonstrated that she can impose herself on Andreeva before the matchup changes shape. She won the first set 6-1 before Andreeva recovered to win 6-4, 6-3.

Monday therefore asks whether Potapova can preserve that aggression once Andreeva begins changing the rhythm.

Potapova’s own pre-match comments suggest she understands the danger of looking too far ahead. She described Andreeva as a friend and their next meeting as another “battle” and “test,” while emphasizing that her priority is remaining in the moment rather than thinking about what victory would mean.

Andreeva is deservedly the overwhelming favorite. She has not dropped a set in New York and has reached the second week here for the first time. But -5.5 asks for something more demanding than victory.

Potapova has already taken a set from Andreeva this year, arrives after defeating last year’s US Open finalist in straight sets, and appears more settled tactically with Doronina back in her corner. One competitive set can place considerable pressure on a six-game margin.

The obvious risk is Andreeva pulling Potapova into rushed decisions and creating one lopsided set. But at this number, Potapova does not need to solve every variation Andreeva presents.

Anastasia Potapova +5.5 (-102) is the betting lean.
