Pitt Finds Virginia Tech Between Tackles

Virginia Tech has built its offense around Jeffrey Overton Jr.’s legs and Ethan Grunkemeyer’s clean decisions. Pitt arrives precisely where that arrangement becomes uncomfortable.

Starting left tackle Justin Terry is out for several weeks. Right guard Montavious Cunningham is expected back, but Virginia Tech has already been moving pieces at left tackle, where Brody Meadows and Logan Howland were both involved against Boston College. Now that reconstructed edge meets a Pitt defense allowing only 53.3 rushing yards per game.

The Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line makes Virginia Tech -3 at -109, Pittsburgh +3 at -106 and the total 54.5, with over -111 and under -106. Virginia Tech is -154 on the moneyline; Pitt +138.

Franklin Already Sees The Conflict

James Franklin did not describe Pitt’s pressure as generic aggression. He specifically identified Pat Narduzzi’s ability to attack protection rules, including blitzes toward the running back and pressure designed around slide-side and man-side tendencies. He also highlighted Pitt’s defensive-line penetration and twist game as problems for pass protection.

That matters because Virginia Tech’s offensive identity begins with Overton. He has 409 rushing yards, while Grunkemeyer has thrown eight touchdowns without an interception. More than a quarter of Grunkemeyer’s attempts have come from play action.

Pitt’s front therefore gets two bites at the same question: constrict Overton before the play-action game starts manufacturing cleaner pictures for Grunkemeyer.

Narduzzi Expects A Counterpunch

Pat Narduzzi knows Virginia Tech is unlikely to simply run its normal menu into that front. “They’re going to try to put us in a bind,” he said while describing the matchup as a “chess match.” He expects Virginia Tech to move the tight end and build a package specifically around Pitt’s defensive structure.

That is the genuinely interesting part. Overton’s speed can punish one bad fit immediately. Pitt defensive coordinator Cory Sanders, meanwhile, says pressure from the front has helped the secondary, while the defense has retained its fast, physical identity.

Heintschel Gets The Healthier Picture

Virginia Tech’s defense has its own argument. Franklin called Mason Heintschel a different quarterback challenge from anything his defense has faced so far. Heintschel enters Blacksburg with 1,191 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and one interception.

Pitt also brings considerably more continuity in front of him. Its offensive line includes fifth-year tackles Netinho Olivieri and Ryan Baer, senior center Ryan Carretta and senior guard BJ Williams.

That is where three points become attractive. Virginia Tech may have the home field and Overton, but Pitt brings the defensive front best equipped to attack the Hokies’ current personnel problem while protecting its own quarterback with the more settled line.

Lane Stadium can make communication miserable. It cannot put Justin Terry back at left tackle.

Prediction: Pittsburgh 27, Virginia Tech 24.
Betting Lean: Pittsburgh +3 (-106).
