Nolan McLean Has Started Reading the Room

Nolan McLean’s stuff is no longer the most interesting thing about Nolan McLean. Mets manager Andy Green recently identified something subtler: the rookie has begun reading games differently, changing how he uses his arsenal when strikeouts aren’t coming. That matters Wednesday because Texas counters with Cody Bradford, whose most encouraging recent work came from behind an opener rather than from the first pitch.

Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line makes New York -108 and Texas -104, with Over 7.5 and Under 7.5 both -106.

Nolan McLean Found Something Beyond Strikeouts

McLean enters at 11-10 with a 3.18 ERA and 189 strikeouts. But Green’s assessment provides the better clue. After watching McLean work without his usual strikeout volume, the Mets manager praised his ability to read the game and use his arsenal differently. When Nolan McLean struggled more recently, Green identified the opposite pressure point: hitters were living away, creating opportunities for him to attack inside more aggressively.

Wednesday becomes another examination of that adjustment rather than simply another showcase of McLean’s pitches.

Bradford Lost His First Inning Once

Texas changed Bradford’s geometry six days ago. Instead of letting the left-hander open against Boston, manager Skip Schumaker started Tyler Alexander and then sent Bradford through the lineup. Bradford responded with 4⅓ scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk.

Bradford is back at the front now. That distinction matters. His 2026 return from UCL surgery has produced a 4.19 ERA and 1.50 WHIP across 38⅔ innings, and Schumaker has openly described the expected “peaks and valleys” after almost two years away.

Texas Cannot Borrow Thursday’s Trick

The temptation is to treat Bradford’s Boston outing as evidence that the correction has arrived. I’m less convinced.

Alexander altered which hitters Bradford encountered first and where those matchups landed on subsequent turns through the order. Wednesday restores the traditional starting sequence against a Mets lineup with Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto and Bo Bichette available at the top.

Nolan McLean, meanwhile, brings both the stronger season and evidence that his game management is expanding beyond overpowering hitters.

At almost a pick’em price, that’s the separation I want.
