Nick Pivetta’s Short Night Suits San Diego

Nick Pivetta has not thrown 80 pitches since April. That sounds like a problem until you look behind him.

San Diego activated Jason Adam on Wednesday, restoring another high-leverage arm to a bullpen already containing Mason Miller and Adrian Morejon. Pivetta has allowed only three runs in 14 innings since returning from a five-month elbow absence, and his workload has climbed from 63 pitches to 69 to 76.

Los Angeles counters with Tyler Glasnow, whose last start produced six innings and 10 strikeouts.

Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line makes the Dodgers -174, San Diego +153, with Padres +1.5 at -148 and the total at 7.5.

Nick Pivetta Only Has to Reach Stammen

Pivetta’s restriction changes the assignment without necessarily weakening it. Craig Stammen called Pivetta’s first start back better than expected. Three starts later, the right-hander has a 1.93 ERA since returning, with 11 strikeouts against one walk.

The innings remain deliberately rationed. Thursday may be useful. Pivetta can attack Ohtani, Betts and Freeman without preserving something for a seventh inning that probably does not belong to him anyway.

Then Stammen gets choices. Adam returned after missing nearly three months with a shoulder strain. Miller and Morejon give San Diego established late-inning weapons around him.

Glasnow Just Removed One Ugly Question

Glasnow entered his last start with seven walks across his previous two outings. Then he struck out 10 Giants over six innings while walking two.

That is exactly why I’m taking San Diego at +153 rather than pretending Glasnow has a problem that Friday may already have solved.

But one clean start does not erase the volatility. Glasnow has made only 12 starts this season. Since returning from the injured list, his five outings have included seven scoreless innings against Arizona, eight earned runs across starts against Washington and Miami, and a sharp correction on Friday. San Diego gets the next examination.

Ohtani Is Back Before His Timing

Shohei Ohtani returned Wednesday after two weeks out with right biceps discomfort. He singled immediately, walked, and finished 1-for-4.

Dave Roberts liked the quality of the at-bats. Andrew Friedman supplied the more interesting detail: before the IL stint, Ohtani had been making subconscious adjustments to protect his injuries, creating small mechanical deterioration. Five games remain to recover that rhythm.

Meanwhile, San Diego arrives with Manny Machado driving the middle of its lineup and a restored bullpen behind Pivetta. The Dodgers are better.

-174 asks whether they’re this much better tonight. I don’t think they are.

Prediction: San Diego Padres 4, Los Angeles Dodgers 3.

Betting Analysis

Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line offers Padres +153.

The market is charging for Glasnow’s ceiling and Los Angeles’ lineup. San Diego counters with a starter whose workload limitation is increasingly manageable because the bullpen behind him just became deeper.

At this price, I want the upset rather than +1.5 at -148.

San Diego Padres +153.
