Nick Pivetta’s Return Runs Into Sunday Math
Nick Pivetta gave San Diego five scoreless innings in his return from a flexor strain. Sunday asks a different question: how much further can the Padres reasonably expect him to go?
Pivetta threw 63 pitches against Washington after nearly five months on the injured list. Craig Stammen said afterward that the performance exceeded expectations, but the controlled workload matters against a Giants lineup whose left-handed power has repeatedly threatened to turn one mistake into several runs.
Logan Webb offers San Francisco the more established route to length. That difference matters more because San Diego has already asked Mason Miller to finish both games in this series.
Bookmaker Sportsbook’s opening line makes San Diego -127 and San Francisco +113, with Padres -1.5 at +135 and Giants +1.5 at -154. The total is 7. The pick is San Francisco +1.5 at -154.
Nick Pivetta’s First 63 Pitches Were Easy
Pivetta allowed two hits, walked nobody, and needed only 63 pitches to complete five innings in his return. The efficiency was encouraging because his command had been the final checkpoint in his rehabilitation. Stammen specifically cited Pivetta’s fastball command and improved curveball before activating him.
Sunday tests what happens when that efficiency disappears. Rafael Devers has homered in both games of this series and now has 37 this season. Bryce Eldridge follows him in the lineup, creating consecutive left-handed threats capable of extending an inning without requiring San Francisco to string together several singles.
That makes Nick Pivetta’s pitch count more consequential than his 3.43 ERA.

Webb Gets a Different Kind of Pressure
Webb enters with a 4.10 ERA across 155⅔ innings, but his most recent start changed the immediate question around him.
After allowing 16 runs across his previous 10⅔ innings, Webb held St. Louis to one run over six innings while striking out eight. The important part for Sunday is not that the poor stretch disappeared. It is that his command was good enough to restore six-inning length.
San Diego has scored in bunches and in increments during this series, so Webb is unlikely to receive many harmless innings. His ground-ball-oriented approach nevertheless offers San Francisco a better chance of preventing traffic from becoming immediate extra-base damage.

Miller Has Already Worked Twice
Friday required 31 pitches from Miller while he escaped a bases-loaded ninth. Saturday was cleaner, but he returned for another save and threw 17 pitches. That is 48 pitches across consecutive days.
Adrian Morejon also worked Saturday, throwing 14 pitches in the eighth after Bradgley Rodriguez failed to record an out against three batters.
The consequence appears if Nick Pivetta again finishes around five innings. San Diego could enter the middle innings with more outs to cover while two of its preferred late-game arms carry consecutive-day workloads.
San Francisco used five relievers Saturday, but Logan Webb offers the more credible path toward reducing that bullpen requirement.
Prediction: San Diego Padres 3, San Francisco Giants 2.
Betting Analysis
Bookmaker Sportsbook’s opening line favors San Diego at -127, which is reasonable given the Padres’ stronger lineup and Pivetta’s excellent return.
The run line asks a different question. San Francisco +1.5 at -154 benefits from Webb’s potential length and the possibility that Pivetta’s second start back exposes San Diego’s bullpen earlier than Stammen would prefer.
A one-run Padres victory still cashes the position.
Betting Lean
San Francisco Giants +1.5 at -154.
