Nick Pivetta Returns With Sixty-Four-Pitch Question

Nick Pivetta returns Monday, but San Diego is not getting an unrestricted version of its Opening Day starter.

Pivetta has missed nearly five months with a right elbow flexor strain. He reached 64 pitches in his final rehab start, and Sportsbook’smanager Craig Stammen expects a similar workload against Washington, perhaps slightly more if Pivetta is efficient. That restriction changes what bettors are buying at nearly -200.

Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line makes San Diego -199 and Washington +174, with the Padres -1.5 at +110 and the total at eight. The betting lean is Washington +1.5 at -125.

Sixty-Four Pitches Opens Another Door

Nick Pivetta’s final rehab appearance supplied genuine encouragement. He struck out seven across 4⅓ scoreless innings, and Stammen specifically highlighted improved fastball command and a better curveball.

The problem is duration. Even an effective Pivetta could leave before completing five innings. San Diego has prepared for that by moving Randy Vásquez from the rotation to the bullpen. Vásquez has a 2.16 ERA and 0.66 WHIP across his last three starts, making him an obvious candidate to absorb meaningful innings behind Pivetta.

That protects the Padres moneyline better than it protects a 1.5-run margin.

Irvin’s Problem Arrives Before the Bullpen

Jake Irvin gives Washington the opposite profile: workload is available, but clean innings have been difficult to sustain.

Irvin enters with a 5.57 ERA and 1.40 WHIP across 85⅔ innings. Over his last seven starts, that ERA rises to 6.09. His last three outings have produced only 14⅓ innings, including four innings against Atlanta on September 1.

That makes San Diego’s top three particularly dangerous. Fernando Tatis Jr., Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado opened Sunday’s game with consecutive home runs, demonstrating exactly how quickly Irvin can lose the run-line cushion if his command leaks over the plate.

San Diego’s Best Reliever Just Worked

Another reason to separate the Padres’ chances of winning from their chances of winning comfortably.

Mason Miller struck out the side Sunday to record his 33rd save. San Diego therefore enters Monday having already used its primary closer immediately before a game in which Pivetta is expected to provide abbreviated length.

Washington also arrives with bullpen concerns after surrendering late leads in consecutive games at Los Angeles. Sunday’s loss required four relievers after Andrew Alvarez worked 4⅓ innings.

That is the principal risk to +1.5. If Irvin cannot provide length, Washington’s relief staff could erase the value of receiving the extra run.

But -125 buys protection against a one-run Padres victory while opposing a starter returning from a five-month absence under an explicit workload restriction. San Diego has constructed a sensible plan for Pivetta’s return. The market is asking whether that plan also produces separation.

Washington Nationals +1.5 at -125 is the betting position.
