New York Gives Marta Kostyuk Extra Time

Marta Kostyuk has identified something about this US Open that changes the equation against Linda Noskova. The courts and balls feel slower to her this year, giving her more time against the kind of heavy serving and aggressive hitting that previously made New York uncomfortable.

That almost describes the problem Noskova intends to create. The Wimbledon champion can shorten points behind her first serve and produce damaging pace without requiring elaborate construction. Kostyuk’s task is to preserve the extra fraction of time she believes these conditions give her, rather than letting Noskova take it away.

Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line prices Marta Kostyuk -147 and Noskova +120, with Kostyuk -1.5 games at -112. Pick: Marta Kostyuk -1.5 (-112).

Marta Kostyuk Has Found More Court

Kostyuk has dropped only 16 games through three rounds. Against Ekaterina Alexandrova, another opponent capable of taking time away with flat power, she won 6-3, 6-2 and captured six consecutive games after falling behind 0-2 in the second set.

Her explanation for her comfort in New York is particularly relevant Sunday. Kostyuk says the slower balls allow her more time to organize against big serves and hard hitters, precisely the situations she previously found difficult here.

That additional preparation time expands what Kostyuk can do with her movement. She does not merely retrieve. Given balance behind the ball, she can redirect pace, change direction early, and turn defense into an attacking position.

Noskova Still Owns the Shortcut

Noskova’s counterargument is straightforward: she does not always need the rally to develop.

Her serve gives her access to shorter points, while her weight of shot can prevent Kostyuk from reaching the balanced defensive positions she wants. That mechanism was visible when Noskova beat Kostyuk 6-4, 6-4 in their Wimbledon semifinal in July.

But Sunday is their first hard-court meeting, and the conditions remove some of the assistance Noskova received from grass.

Noskova also arrives after a more uneven third round. She beat Ann Li 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-2, breaking six times but allowing Li back into a match that initially looked firmly under her command. Afterward, Noskova admitted she had made the contest unnecessarily complicated before finding her way through.

That makes the WTA Betting Guide relevant here: the favorite does not need the cleaner power profile if she can repeatedly force the underdog to hit an additional ball from uncomfortable positions.

Wimbledon’s Answer Has Already Expired

The temptation is to treat their Wimbledon semifinal as the obvious template. It is more useful as a question. Can Noskova recreate the same compressed timing on a slower surface, when Kostyuk believes she has considerably more time to respond?

Their other 2026 meeting demonstrates how dramatically that answer can change with conditions. Kostyuk beat Noskova 7-6(1), 6-0 in Madrid before Noskova reversed the matchup on grass. The head-to-head therefore offers evidence of surface sensitivity rather than a dependable hierarchy.

Kostyuk’s broader change is mental as well as tactical. She says she has become better at accepting difficult periods inside matches instead of treating every problem as something that immediately needs fixing. That matters against Noskova because stretches of unreturnable serving and sudden winners are inevitable.

Noskova’s risk to the wager is equally clear. If she serves accurately enough to keep Kostyuk from establishing return pressure, +120 becomes attractive quickly.

But the current conditions favor the player better equipped to extend exchanges, absorb pace, and make the match physically repetitive. Kostyuk has reached this round without dropping a set and arrives after her cleanest performance of the tournament.

Marta Kostyuk -1.5 games (-112) is the betting lean.
