Naomi Osaka Meets Rybakina’s First-Ball Test
Naomi Osaka has spent this US Open proving she can survive imperfect tennis. Elena Rybakina is about to ask whether she can survive without enough time to recover between the first two shots.
That is a different problem. Rybakina’s serve has carried her through three straight-set victories, while Osaka needed three sets against both Katerina Siniakova and Elise Mertens. More importantly, Naomi Osaka required treatment for a left Achilles problem against Mertens and acknowledged afterward that the issue has persisted since the grass season.
Against most opponents, that can remain manageable. Against Rybakina, one compromised first step can decide an entire service game.
Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line: Elena Rybakina -145, Naomi Osaka +118. Rybakina is -2 games at -108, with Osaka +2 at -114. The total opened at 23 games, over -108 and under -114. My lean is Elena Rybakina -2 games at -108.
Thirteen Aces Changed Toronto Late
Their Toronto quarterfinal three weeks ago provides unusually useful evidence because neither player needs to imagine how this matchup behaves on a North American hard court.
Naomi Osaka won the opening set and led by a break twice in the second. Rybakina still escaped 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4.
Her 13 aces were not merely decorative. They repeatedly shortened service games when Osaka threatened to seize control, especially after Rybakina had already fallen behind.
That becomes Monday’s first unresolved problem. Osaka’s return can attack second serves aggressively enough to keep Rybakina from settling, but Rybakina needs fewer neutral exchanges to hold serve. If enough games begin 15-0 through the serve alone, Osaka has to take greater risks on the return to create pressure.

One Achilles Changes Naomi Osaka’s First Step
Osaka’s victory over Mertens revealed both the attraction and the danger in backing her.
She recovered from a difficult middle stretch to win 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, and after receiving treatment in the third set, she produced one of her strongest passages of the match. The problem isn’t that she couldn’t compete through the discomfort.
The problem is what Rybakina can make her do repeatedly. Naomi Osaka described the Achilles issue as something that has been lingering since the grass season rather than a new injury. There is no evidence she cannot play effectively through it. There is also no way to remove it from a matchup built around explosive first movements.
Rybakina can pull the returner outside the singles line with the serve and attack the next ball before court position has been restored. Osaka’s own serve can protect her from that pattern, but any extended return game becomes more physically demanding when the first step is repeatedly tested.

Starodubtseva Found the Small Crack
Rybakina has not been untouchable. Yuliia Starodubtseva broke her for 5-4 in the opening set on Saturday and pushed her into a tiebreak. Rybakina produced 25 winners but 22 unforced errors in that set, occasionally giving away precisely the neutral balls Osaka will attack far more severely.
Then the serve intervened. Rybakina struck three aces in the tiebreak alone and eventually won 7-6(6), 6-3. She had already produced 11 aces during the opening set.
That is the uncomfortable part for Naomi Osaka. She doesn’t just need Rybakina’s level to fluctuate. She has to punish the fluctuation before the serve resets the scoreboard.
The principal risk in laying two games is obvious. Osaka remains one of the few players capable of matching Rybakina’s first-strike power, and Toronto showed she can dictate this matchup for long stretches. If her Achilles remains quiet and the first serve lands consistently, +118 is entirely defensible.
But the spread asks for less.
Rybakina arrives with a cleaner physical profile, a more economical route through New York, and a serve capable of making Osaka’s hardest current movement unavoidable.
Toronto required Rybakina to solve the match late. New York may give her that solution much earlier.
Betting lean: Elena Rybakina -2 games at -108.
