Mina Tanaka Has Orlando Pride’s Attention Now

Jimmy Coenraets has already described the problem Orlando Pride faces on Saturday. “I think every opposition team is looking at her and trying to stop her,” the Utah coach said of Mina Tanaka. The inconvenient second half of that sentence was that Tanaka keeps “learning and adapting every game.”

She arrives at Inter&Co Stadium after scoring twice against San Diego, giving her three goals across two games and eight goals with four assists this season. Orlando arrives after producing something very different: a 1-0 win at Washington built around defensive discipline and Barbra Banda forcing the turnover that created Haley McCutcheon’s third-minute winner.

The matchup is Mina Tanaka against an Orlando Pride team that has just remembered that one goal is enough.

Orlando Pride’s Clean Sheet Has Competition

Seb Hines praised Orlando’s “attention to detail” after the Washington win, when Cosette Morché kept a clean sheet on her NWSL debut.

Utah presents a different problem. The Royals have scored 11 goals across their last five league games, including five against Portland, three against Bay FC and two against San Diego. Tanaka has become the club’s all-time leading scorer, while Cloé Lacasse reached nine assists and at least 15 goal contributions this season.

Orlando suppressed Washington for long stretches. Utah brings two creators whose movement can pull attention away from each other.

Banda Can Change The Other End

Utah’s attacking form has arrived at a cost. The Royals conceded four against San Diego, two against Bay FC, and two against Denver. Orlando’s attack has struggled for consistency, but Banda remains its sharpest way to turn an ordinary defensive possession into immediate danger.

Her pressure created McCutcheon’s winner against Washington, and she enters Saturday with 12 league goals.

Utah beat Orlando 1-0 on July 18, when Narumi’s long-range strike separated teams that created few clear chances. Saturday arrives with Utah producing considerably more attacking football than it was then, but also conceding far more freely.

The Price Points Toward Mina Tanaka Scoring Goals

Bookmaker Sportsbook makes Utah the narrow +145 favorite, with Orlando at +168 and the draw +245.

The stronger angle is the total. Utah’s last four matches have produced 6, 3, 5 and 6 goals. Orlando’s previous three before Washington produced 5, 4 and 3. The first meeting was controlled and low-event; the evidence immediately before this rematch looks very different.

Prediction: Utah Royals 2-1 Orlando Pride

Betting lean: Over 2.5 goals -138

Utah has the more productive attack and already knows it can beat Orlando. Orlando has Banda and a fresh reminder that its press can create a goal from very little.

Tanaka is the player Orlando will be watching. Lacasse is one reason that may not be enough.
