Michael Soroka Takes Gallen’s September Chair

Michael Soroka has gone from the injured list to replacing Zac Gallen in Arizona’s rotation in less than a week.

Soroka worked four innings behind Gallen in Kansas City after recovering from a shoulder injury, allowing three runs on three hits. Torey Lovullo has now reversed their order entirely: Soroka starts Tuesday while Gallen moves to the bullpen.

Miami counters with Janson Junk, whose previous start lasted three innings and produced eight runs.

Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line has Arizona -141, Miami +125 and the total at 8.5. My pick is Diamondbacks -141, with Arizona winning 5-4.

Michael Soroka Gets More Than Four Innings

Soroka’s 3.53 ERA and 1.16 WHIP make the rotation decision understandable. His 95 strikeouts against only 25 walks across 99 1/3 innings also describe a pitcher who rarely creates his own traffic.

Tuesday asks a different question. Michael Soroka threw only 58 pitches in his return, after a 59-pitch simulated game completed his rehabilitation. Arizona therefore has a starter whose season-long performance deserves trust but whose immediate workload has been deliberately limited.

That makes Gallen’s move to long relief more than roster housekeeping. If Soroka reaches his limit early, Arizona can cover innings without immediately emptying a bullpen that used four relievers Monday.

Corbin Carroll accelerates around first base during a previous professional Arizona baseball game.

Junk Brings One Very Bad Inning

Junk entered his last start against the Mets with a 4.00 ERA. Five consecutive hits opened a six-run second inning, and two more runs followed in the third.

He finished with eight runs on eight hits, one walk and no strikeouts across three innings. His ERA jumped to 4.54.

The useful question is whether Arizona can make another inning unravel before Junk finds the soft contact and efficiency that previously kept him competitive.

Corbin Carroll is particularly awkward in that equation. Monday’s walk-off homer followed an earlier RBI single, while Gabriel Moreno reached base to begin the winning rally. Arizona does not require Junk to surrender another eight runs; it requires enough sustained traffic to reach Miami’s bullpen early.

Fairbanks Changes Miami’s Ninth Inning

Miami’s bullpen faces a more immediate concern on Tuesday. Pete Fairbanks left Monday’s ninth inning with an apparent injury after throwing one pitch to Geraldo Perdomo. Jack Ralston replaced him before Carroll ended the game.

That potentially changes Clayton McCullough’s late-inning map, particularly if Junk again creates an early workload for the relief corps.

Arizona also used Jonathan Loáisiga, Kevin Ginkel, Justin Martinez and Juan Morillo on Monday, so neither bullpen arrives untouched.

Minus 141 Prices Arizona’s Insurance

Soroka is not fully stretched out, but Arizona has deliberately created a second layer behind him by moving Gallen to relief.

Junk offers no comparable comfort after his shortest and most damaging start of September.
