Merrill Kelly’s Improvement Still Has Traffic
Merrill Kelly has lowered the temperature around his season without entirely removing the smoke. He carries a 2.74 ERA across his last four starts into Wednesday, but Texas forced him out after 4⅓ innings on Friday despite collecting only two hits. Three walks and a hit batter pushed Kelly to 80 pitches.
Miami sends Ryan Gusto, who just held the Dodgers to two runs across six innings in his first quality start since August 4.
Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line has Arizona -133, Miami +117 and the total at nine. My pick is Diamondbacks -133, with Arizona winning 5-3.
Merrill Kelly’s Fastball Survived the Traffic
Merrill Kelly’s explanation after facing Texas matters more than the abbreviated line. He said his stuff felt good and that his fastball was “coming up pretty well,” while crediting Texas for refusing borderline pitches. That distinction turns Wednesday into a strike-zone problem rather than a stuff problem.
Kelly has issued 67 walks in 152 innings. Miami enters the game hitting .249 as a team, sixth in the National League, so free baserunners create the kind of innings that can turn modest contact into crooked numbers.
The encouraging part for Arizona is what happens when Kelly makes hitters earn their way aboard. Opponents have produced only a .691 OPS against him over the last 28 days.

Gusto Just Changed His Own Question
Gusto’s 4.14 ERA doesn’t fully capture the version Arizona sees on Wednesday. He allowed two runs on five hits over six innings against the Dodgers, throwing 60 of 89 pitches for strikes. It was only the second time in seven outings that he had worked beyond five innings.
That makes efficiency the hinge. Arizona left 15 runners aboard Tuesday and went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position. The relevant lesson is not that those failures will repeat. It is that this lineup generated enough traffic to create 13 opportunities with runners in scoring position.
Gusto’s 1.40 WHIP leaves room for the same pressure.

Tuesday Took Eleven Innings From Both
Neither bullpen receives a completely clean slate. Tuesday lasted 11 innings. Miami used Josh Ekness for the final twoinnings, while Arizona eventually reached Taylor Clarke after five scoreless relief innings following Soroka.
That increases the value of whichever starter carries the game deeper. Gusto reached six innings Friday. Kelly has reached six twice during his four-start improvement, but Friday’s command prevented a third.
Wednesday therefore has an unusual little race inside the larger one: which starter reaches the sixth before traffic forces the manager’s hand?
Minus 133 Leaves Kelly Some Work
Gusto’s latest start makes Miami more dangerous than the price initially appears, but Arizona has the deeper mechanism for creating scoring opportunities if his baserunners return.
Kelly does not require pristine command. He requires enough strikes to prevent Miami from choosing which pitches deserve swings.

Arizona Diamondbacks -133.
Prediction: Diamondbacks 5, Marlins 3.
