Merrill Kelly Hid Something Important

Merrill Kelly’s 5.08 ERA tells Houston what has happened this season. His last two starts pose a more useful question about what will happen Friday.

The Cubs identified a physical tell in Kelly’s delivery two starts ago and relayed his pitches from the third-base coaching box. Arizona subsequently acknowledged that Kelly was tipping pitches. He then faced San Francisco and threw seven scoreless innings on two hits. Whatever changed between those starts now travels with him to Daikin Park.

Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line makes Houston a -135 favorite, with Arizona +120 and the total at nine. The betting lean is Diamondbacks +120.

Seven Scoreless Innings Changed the Question

Kelly’s response against San Francisco matters because it provides the first evidence that the problem was identifiable rather than simply another symptom of a poor season.

There is still a complication. Kelly walked four Giants and has issued at least three walks in six consecutive starts. Removing a pitch tell does not remove the traffic.

Houston is particularly capable of making that distinction uncomfortable. Yordan Alvarez and Jose Altuve remain embedded in a lineup that has recently received additional production from Nelson Velázquez. At the same time, the Astros enter the series having won seven of their last 10.

Houston Astros right-hander Cristian Javier delivers a pitch during a previous professional MLB game at Daikin Park.

Javier’s 6.45 ERA Isn’t the Whole Problem

Cristian Javier’s route back to this start has been unconventional. A right shoulder strain interrupted his season in April. When Houston activated him in July, Joe Espada initially moved him into the bullpen because of workload, recovery, velocity, and pitch-shape considerations.

He now brings a 1-5 record and 6.45 ERA into Friday.

That makes Arizona’s restored lineup important. Ketel Marte returned from knee inflammation earlier this week, giving Torey Lovullo another established bat as the Diamondbacks defend a half-game advantage for the final NL wild-card position.

The MLB Playoffs Betting Guide offers broader context for evaluating these September games when rotation decisions and bullpen management increasingly overlap with postseason positioning.

Wednesday’s Shutout Came With a Bill

Arizona’s largest risk may arrive after Kelly leaves.

The Diamondbacks used seven pitchers Wednesday to shut out Philadelphia 1-0. That secured their return to the final wild-card position, but it also means Friday follows a game built entirely from the bullpen.

Houston’s relief situation looks healthier after Hunter Brown worked six innings Thursday and the bullpen handled only three. Earlier in the week, Espada had deliberately protected a relief group carrying substantial August workloads.

That is where +120 becomes vulnerable. Kelly needs sufficient length to prevent Arizona’s recently taxed bullpen from deciding the game.

But Houston is asking bettors to lay -135 behind a starter with a 6.45 ERA whose season has already been interrupted by a shoulder problem. Kelly’s latest start provides tangible evidence that one identifiable weakness was corrected.

Arizona Diamondbacks +120 is the betting position.
