Merrill Kelly Finds What Rocker Just Lost
Merrill Kelly’s 5.06 ERA tells Texas what Arizona looked like a month ago. His last two starts tell the Rangers what may actually be waiting at Chase Field.
Kelly followed seven scoreless innings against San Francisco with six innings against Houston in which one three-run inning accounted for all the damage. More importantly, he did not walk a batter after issuing at least three walks in six consecutive starts.
Kumar Rocker arrives from the opposite direction. Tampa Bay scored six runs, five earned, against him over five innings last Friday.
Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line has Arizona -133, Texas +117, with the total at nine. My pick is Diamondbacks -133, with Arizona winning 5-3.
Rocker’s Fastball Wasn’t the Problem
Texas manager Skip Schumaker offered a useful distinction after Rocker’s latest start. “It’s a lot of innings for him this year, more than ever,” Schumaker said before noting that Rocker was still throwing 96 mph. His diagnosis was execution: Rocker repeatedly located pitches in Tampa Bay hitters’ “hot zones.”
That changes the handicap. A tired pitcher losing velocity can sometimes hide behind sequencing. Rocker, still possessing his stuff but leaving it in damaging locations, presents Arizona with a more immediate opportunity, particularly if Corbin Carroll returns as expected after a clean MRI on his troublesome back.
Carroll’s speed and extra-base threat can punish mistakes without requiring Arizona to string four singles together.

Merrill Kelly Finally Hid the Answer
Kelly’s improvement deserves context; August was challenging. During a loss to Chicago, Arizona concluded that Kelly was tipping pitches. Kelly accepted that he needed to examine what opponents saw, and Torey Lovullo later acknowledged that Chicago had done nothing improper.
Merrill Kelly responded with seven scoreless innings against San Francisco. Against Houston, he allowed seven hits but no walks across six innings.
That progression matters more than simply saying he has consecutive quality starts. The Rangers are facing a pitcher who has recently addressed both information leakage and deteriorating command.
Texas does bring power. Jake Burger has 26 home runs, while Joc Pederson reached 25 with Thursday’s two-run shot in Seattle. Kelly therefore receives little margin when he misses over the plate.

Thursday Left Texas One Inning Short
Texas also arrives immediately after a bullpen loss that should influence Friday’s late innings.
Jacob deGrom handed the bullpen six scoreless innings and a 3-0 lead Thursday. Jakob Junis then failed to record an out as Seattle scored four in the seventh.
Arizona’s relief corps has been substantially more dependable, carrying a 3.28 ERA entering Friday compared with Texas at 3.54. The Diamondbacks’ better late-inning structure matters if Kelly and Rocker leave a close game after five or six.
Minus 133 Prices the Separation
Arizona is not being backed because Kelly suddenly became an ace again.
The argument is narrower: his two most damaging recent problems have shown evidence of correction, while Rocker’s latest start exposed a location issue that remained present despite healthy velocity.
Carroll’s expected return adds another pressure point against those mistakes.
Betting Lean: Arizona Diamondbacks -133.
Prediction: Diamondbacks 5, Rangers 3.
