Marshall Gives Missouri Two Problems Tonight

Missouri spent the week preparing for Kansas quarterback Isaiah Marshall as two players occupying the same uniform.

Marshall threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns in his first start, but the more consequential number for Missouri may be his 49 rushing yards. Eli Drinkwitz specifically identified quarterback containment among the areas his defense has been working to improve before Friday. Against Marshall, losing the quarterback after initially defending the pass can turn an otherwise successful snap into Kansas’ easiest source of hidden yardage.

Missouri has the more established roster and Austin Simmons looked immediately comfortable in his debut. Kansas, however, brings the quarterback who creates the more awkward defensive equation.

Bookmaker Sportsbook’s opening line: Missouri -5.5 (-104), Kansas +5.5 (-112), total 52; Missouri -205, Kansas +178. Pick: Kansas +5.5 (-112).

Missouri Has Been Practicing For Two Marshalls

Kansas’ opener revealed more than Marshall’s box score. He operated behind an offensive line that returned recognizable continuity, while Dylan Edwards and Yasin Willis give the backfield multiple rushing threats around him.

That affects Missouri’s defensive spacing. Marshall can extend passing plays, but designed or improvised quarterback runs also force defenders to account for an additional ball carrier without abandoning Edwards or Willis.

Drinkwitz said Missouri would have to be “disciplined” and make good in-game adjustments. His list of concerns included run defense and quarterback containment, a revealing combination against this particular offense.

Hardy’s Absence Changes Simmons’ First Road Test

Missouri’s offensive debut was cleaner through the air than on the ground. Simmons completed 17 of 19 passes for 252 yards and four touchdowns, but the Tigers are preparing for Kansas without star running back Ahmad Hardy, whose return remains weeks away.

That pushes more of the rushing workload toward Jamal Roberts and Xai’Shaun Edwards after Missouri acknowledged problems with its offensive-line execution in the opener. Transfer Malae Fonoti has also been lost for the season, reducing the experienced depth behind them.

Cayden Green’s possible return could materially improve the line, but his availability has not been established firmly enough to treat him as a confirmed starter Friday.

For Simmons, that creates a very different second assignment. This is his first road start for Missouri, in a rivalry environment, against a Kansas front that produced immediate disruption in its opener.

Four Tackles For Loss Travel Differently

Kansas edge defender Leroy Harris III recorded four tackles for loss against LIU. Missouri obviously represents a substantial jump in opposition, but the mechanism carries forward: Kansas has several edge players available to rotate, while Missouri is still sorting through its preferred offensive-line combination.

Simmons’ passing efficiency makes reckless pressure unattractive. The more interesting battle is whether Kansas can disturb the pocket with its front while keeping enough defenders available for Missouri’s receivers.

That is where the spread becomes interesting. Kansas does not require Marshall to outperform Simmons as a passer. The Jayhawks can create comparable offensive value if Marshall’s legs repeatedly turn Missouri’s well-defended snaps into first downs.

Five And A Half Prices Stability

Missouri deserves favoritism. Simmons has already demonstrated considerable passing efficiency, and Kansas’ secondary remains much less proven than its defensive front.

But -5.5 asks Missouri to create separation while missing Hardy, entering its first road game and confronting a mobile quarterback whose specific skill set overlaps with two defensive concerns Drinkwitz identified himself.

Betting lean: Kansas +5.5 (-112). Game prediction: Missouri 28, Kansas 24.

The moneyline asks more from Kansas than the matchup evidence supports. Five and a half points allows Marshall’s mobility and the home environment to matter without requiring Kansas to be the better team for four quarters.
