Mahomes Returns Behind a Missing Tackle
Patrick Mahomes is back. His left tackle is not. Kansas City has cleared Mahomes for its opener after last season’s ACL and LCL injuries, but starting left tackle Josh Simmons has been ruled out with a back injury. Denver arrives with the pass rush that has led the NFL in sacks for two straight seasons and with essentially its full roster available.
That puts one question above everything else Monday night: how much can Mahomes’ mobility and timing disguise a weakened blind side before Nik Bonitto and Denver’s front begin dictating the down?
Bookmaker Sportsbook’s opening line makes Kansas City -2 (-109) and Denver +2 (-107), with Over 43.5 at -112, Under 43.5 at -104, Kansas City -137 and Denver +120 on the moneyline.
Pick: Denver +2 (-107).
Simmons’ Absence Changes Mahomes’ Return
Mahomes participated fully through the final stages of preparation, and Andy Reid has confirmed he is set to play. Mahomes said getting back for Week 1 had “always been the goal.” The knee therefore is not an availability question anymore. How freely Kansas City lets him solve pressure with movement is.
That distinction matters against Denver. Bonitto and Zach Allen headline a front built to force quarterbacks off their first read. Vance Joseph said Denver expects Mahomes’ “best shot.” Still, the more interesting part is structural: an absent left tackle can turn ordinary four-person pressure into an extra defender in coverage because Joseph does not always have to manufacture heat.
Kansas City can answer with quicker throws and Kenneth Walker III, whose addition gives Reid another way to punish aggressive edges. But every protection adjustment spent on the blind side removes something from the rest of the formation.

Denver Added Speed to Spagnuolo’s Puzzle
Kansas City’s own defense has a personnel issue to solve. Defensive back Chamarri Conner is out, while Jaylen Waddle is set to make his Denver debut alongside Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims Jr., and Evan Engram. Chiefs coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said of Waddle this week that Kansas City has “always got to know where he is.” That is more than a compliment.
Waddle gives Bo Nix a horizontal and vertical stress point that can move safeties before the snap and create cleaner isolation elsewhere. Mims, meanwhile, was a full participant all week despite a foot listing and carries no game designation. Denver therefore enters without the obvious skill-position restriction that would let Kansas City compress coverage.

Two Healthy Quarterbacks Hide Different Risks
Nix is also returning from a major injury, but Denver enters with considerably fewer protection concerns around him. Kansas City still has Chris Jones anchoring its interior rush, yet the Broncos’ offensive structure can distribute the ball quickly and force Spagnuolo to reveal pressure before Nix holds it long.
The contrast is subtle but important for a two-point spread. Mahomes remains the best improviser in the matchup. Denver has a cleaner environment around its quarterback and a more obvious place to attack Kansas City’s protection.
That makes the underdog more attractive than the total. If Denver can collapse Mahomes’ left edge often enough to force shorter throws and quicker decisions, Kansas City’s explosive ceiling narrows without requiring the Broncos to shut the offense down.
Prediction: Broncos 23, Chiefs 21.
Betting Lean: Denver +2 (-107). The wager is not built on fading Mahomes’ knee. It is built on asking whether Kansas City can protect his blind side well enough against one of the league’s strongest pass-rush structures. With Denver healthy and Simmons unavailable, two points matter.
