Luke Trainer Keeps Finding Necks. Roland Dunlap Has Never Given Him One.
Luke Trainer has won five straight fights. Four ended with a choke. His latest came against former PFL champion Rob Wilkinson in February, when Trainer finished him with a first-round guillotine at 3:48. Now PFL’s No. 3-ranked light heavyweight gets an undefeated newcomer whose wrestling résumé changes the terms of the conversation.
Roland Dunlap arrives at PFL Tampa 7-0 as a professional, with four knockout wins and three decisions. PFL identifies him as a former U.S. Marine, three-time All-American wrestler and owner of a 159-9 amateur wrestling record.
Trainer keeps strangling wrestlers. PFL just found him another one. At 6-foot-6, Trainer brings unusual length to a division already populated by large men. Dunlap stands 6-foot-3, has competed at middleweight and light heavyweight, and is coming off an 18-second knockout of Coby Bradford in March.
What If Dunlap Never Gives Trainer His Neck?
Trainer’s submission record deserves more attention than simply counting finishes. Six of his 10 professional victories have come by submission. He took undefeated wrestling prospect Sullivan Cauley’s back and submitted him with a rear-naked choke in 2023. Laurynas Urbonavicius suffered the same finish in 2024. Wilkinson was caught with the guillotine this February.
Trainer’s height helps him build those attacks. Long arms become particularly useful when opponents change levels or try to escape along the fence. A wrestling exchange that appears successful can leave the head exposed underneath Trainer’s chest.
Dunlap is unlikely to wrestle recklessly. His background is too extensive for that. The more interesting question is whether he can force Trainer to grapple defensively without extending his neck during transitions.

Dunlap’s Last Opponent Lasted 18 Seconds
Dunlap’s last fight barely became a fight. Bradford attacked, and Dunlap countered him with a right hand, then finished with ground strikes after only 18 seconds. Before that, Dunlap stopped Michael Tovar with elbows in the second round and went five rounds to beat Dahlen Wilson by unanimous decision for the APFC middleweight title.
Dunlap has shown sudden finishing power, but he has also completed five championship rounds. His wrestling gives him a route to dictate where exchanges begin, while the karate component of his striking makes his movement less conventional than that of a straightforward pressure wrestler. Sherdog lists his style as wrestling and karate.
Against Trainer, the counter right may be especially useful when the taller Englishman reaches with punches or advances upright.

Simon Biyong Found The Crack Nobody Else Has
Simon Biyong remains the only man to beat Trainer professionally. Trainer actually started that 2022 fight well. After scrambling from underneath, he took Biyong’s back and repeatedly threatened a rear-naked choke late in the first round. Then Biyong hurt him badly with a right hand in the second, dropped him, and poured on ground-and-pound. Trainer survived but was dropped again in the third and lost a unanimous decision.
Trainer can absorb serious damage without being knocked out of a fight. He can also become vulnerable when a powerful opponent forces him backward and makes his tall stance work against him.
Every Takedown Comes With A Catch
Dunlap’s obvious advantage is wrestling pedigree. Trainer’s most dangerous work often begins precisely where a wrestler wants to operate.
Dunlap can pressure Trainer toward the fence, attack the hips and make the taller man carry weight. But every clinch creates upper-body connections. Every level change places Dunlap’s head somewhere. Every attempt to stand after a scramble gives Trainer opportunities to climb onto the back.
Trainer’s win over Cauley is particularly relevant. Cauley entered undefeated with his own strong wrestling background. Trainer outworked him early, took the back and finished the rear-naked choke in 2:58.
The MMA/UFC Betting Hub and PFL Betting Guide provide broader context for fights where stylistic reputation can distort the matchup. “Better wrestler” does not automatically settle a fight when the opponent’s most dangerous attacks live inside wrestling transitions.

Dunlap Shouldn’t Play Trainer’s Favorite Game
Trainer has won five consecutive fights since the Biyong defeat, including four submissions. PFL lists him at 10-1, while Dunlap makes his promotional debut at 7-0.
Dunlap’s best route may therefore involve making this fight less adventurous than Trainer wants.
He can use the threat of the takedown without chasing extended mat exchanges, work from clinches, separate on his own terms and force Trainer to reset. At range, the three-inch height disadvantage means Dunlap must negotiate Trainer’s jab and long kicking game before reaching his preferred distance.
Trainer can make that entry expensive with knees and front kicks. Dunlap can make staying tall expensive with the counter right and level changes.
Is Trainer Really A -365 Fighter Here?
Bookmaker Sportsbook makes Trainer a substantial -365 favorite, with Dunlap at +270.
The case for Trainer is obvious enough: considerably more high-level MMA experience, six career submissions, five consecutive victories and a first-round finish over Wilkinson in his latest appearance. PFL has him ranked third at light heavyweight.
Dunlap’s price reflects uncertainty as much as ability. His résumé includes PFL Challenger Series and LFA experience, but Trainer represents a significant jump from his recent APFC opposition.
The awkward part for -365 is the skill Dunlap brings with him. Trainer has repeatedly punished grapplers for giving him transitional opportunities. Dunlap has spent much of his competitive life learning how not to surrender them.

Betting Lean: Roland Dunlap +270
The underdog price offers more appeal than paying -365 for Trainer against an undefeated opponent with Dunlap’s wrestling base, five-round experience and countering power.
Trainer remains the more proven mixed martial artist, but Dunlap has tools that can deny him the loose grappling exchanges on which his submission streak has fed.
Fight Prediction
Luke Trainer by decision.
Dunlap’s wrestling should make Trainer work harder for dominant grappling positions than several recent opponents have. Trainer’s length, submission threat and greater experience against established light heavyweights give him more ways to adjust if the first approach fails.
